Swanders, Ohio
Swanders is a rural unincorporated community located on Fort Loramie-Swanders Road in Franklin Township, Shelby County, Ohio, United States. It lies midway between the village of Anna and the city of Sidney. History In 1857 the Dayton and Michigan Railroad was constructed through James Swander's farm who gave the railroad the right of way through his farm; in 1867 a flag station of the D & M. R. R. and a Post Office was established in the village on the application of James Swander. The village was named in honor of James Swanders who was the town first postmaster and who also served as a railroad agent for the D & M R R. One of the 1965 Palm Sunday tornados narrowly missed the community. For many years, Swanders was the location of a community-owned grain elevator, which has since been demolished with the silos and office remaining of the ag business which was purchased in the 1990s by Wapakoneta-based Auglaize-Provico. Franklin Township is one of the fourteen townships of Shelby County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 2,842 people in the township, 1,773 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township. Shelby County, Ohio
Shelby County is a county in the western portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 48,230. Its county seat is Sidney. Its name honors Isaac Shelby, first governor of Kentucky. Shelby County comprises the Sidney, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Dayton- Springfield-Sidney, OH Combined Statistical Area. History The Algonquian-speaking Shawnee Native Americans had come into the area in the 18th century, displacing the Ojibwa-speaking Ottawa of the Anishinaabeg, a related language group who moved northwest. Anna is a village in Shelby County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. History Pre-historical period The prehistoric Teays River ran through modern-day Anna about 2 million years ago. The Teays river deposited loose sediment on the Greenville fault line which created a major earthquake center. Native American period According to the Native Americans, Tecumseh tried to start his alliances in what is now Anna. Most native Shawnee and Miami tribes refused the offer. He supposedly put a curse on the land. The curse stated that the land would be ever plagued with the trembling of the earth. Settlement The first white settlement at Anna was made in the 1830s. Anna was platted in 1868, and named for Anna Thirkield. Sidney is a city in Shelby County, Ohio, located approximately 36 mi (58 km) north of Dayton and 100 mi (161 km) south of Toledo. The population was 20,421 at the time of the 2020 census. Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak Of 1965
On April 10–12, 1965, a devastating severe weather event affected the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. The tornado outbreak produced 55 confirmed tornadoes in one day and 16 hours. The worst part of the outbreak occurred during the afternoon hours of April 11 into the overnight hours going into April 12. The second-largest tornado outbreak on record at the time, this deadly series of tornadoes, which became known as the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, inflicted a swath of destruction from Cedar County, Iowa, to Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and a swath from Kent County, Michigan, to Montgomery County, Indiana.
