Svensen, Oregon
Svensen is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) on the Columbia River in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States, named after early settler Peter Svensen. There was a post office in Svensen from 1895 to 1944. Since the closure of the Svensen Post Office, mail service has been provided by rural carriers of the Astoria, Oregon post office. Svensen is within the Knappa School District. Demographics History Svensen and Svensen Island are separated by Svensen Slough on the south side of the Columbia River at River Mile 24, between Settler's Point (downstream) and Knappa (upstream). The Lewis and Clark Expedition encamped in this area on November 26, 1805, en route to winter camp at Fort Clatsop. Knappa High School
Knappa High School is a public high school near Knappa, Oregon, United States. The school is located on Old Highway 30, 12 miles east of Astoria and 90 miles from Portland, between Svensen and Knappa. The Knappa School District (of which this is the sole comprehensive high school) serves the unincorporated communities of Knappa, Svensen, Burnside and Brownsmead. Clatsop Community College
Clatsop Community College (CCC) is a public community college with facilities in Astoria and Seaside, Oregon. The college's service area includes Clatsop County, portions of Columbia and Tillamook counties and Pacific and Wahkiakum counties in Washington state. History CCC was established under the direction of the Astoria Board of Education in 1958 and constitutes Oregon's first community college. The original curriculum included two years of classes that could be transferred and two year sequences in Electronics, Business, Automotive and Building Construction. In 1962, Clatsop County residents voted to form a county-wide education district and separate the college from the school district. Corps Of Discovery
The Corps of Discovery was a specially established unit of the United States Army which formed the nucleus of the Lewis and Clark Expedition that took place between May 1804 and September 1806. The Corps was led jointly by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, the Corps' objectives were scientific and commercial — to study the area's plants, animal life, and geography, and to learn how the Louisiana Purchase could be exploited economically. Aside from its military composition, the Corps' additional personnel included scouts, boatmen, and civilians. Fort Clatsop
Fort Clatsop was the encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the Oregon Country near the mouth of the Columbia River during the winter of 1805–1806. Located along the Lewis and Clark River at the north end of the Clatsop Plains approximately southwest of Astoria, Oregon, Astoria, the fort was the last encampment of the Corps of Discovery, before embarking on their return trip east to St. Louis, Missouri, St. Louis. The Lewis and Clark Expedition wintered at Fort Clatsop before returning east to St. Louis in the spring of 1806. It took just over three weeks for the Expedition to build the fort, and it served as their camp from December 8, 1805 until their departure on March 23, 1806.
