Suwannee is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Dixie County, Florida, Dixie County, Florida, United States. It is located on the Suwannee River near its mouth, at the southern end of the Big Bend (Florida), Big Bend region of Florida. It is 23 miles southwest of Old Town, Florida, Old Town, to which it is connected by County Road 349 (Dixie County, Florida), County Road 349. Suwannee is a fishing village, with a population of about 300. It caters for both freshwater fishing in the river and saltwater fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. During the 19th century, the area on which the town sits was an important staging ground for goods traveling to and from the cotton and tobacco plantations throughout the Suwannee Valley. Suwannee County is a county located in the north central portion of the state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,474, up from 41,551 in 2010. Its county seat is Live Oak. Suwannee County was a dry county until August 2011, when the sale of alcoholic beverages became legal in the county. History Suwannee County was created in 1858, as railways were constructed through the area connecting it to Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and points north. It was named after the Suwannee River, which forms the county's northern, western, and much of its southern border. The word "Suwannee" may either be a corruption of the Spanish ''San Juan'' ("Saint John") or from the Cherokee ''sawani'' ("echo river"). During the American Civil War, Company K of the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment was composed almost entirely of men from Suwannee County. USS ''Suwannee'' (CVE-27), was built as the civilian oiler ''Markay'', in 1939, before being acquired by the US Navy, in 1941, and renamed ''Suwannee'' (AO-33), after the tradition of naming fleet oilers after rivers. Suwannee Point
The Suwannee point is a large unfluted lanceolate type of Paleo-Indian projectile point that features a recurvate profile with a slightly narrowed waist and a convex base. The point is one of the earliest forms of lanceolate types and is dated between 10500–9500 Before Present. It represents a typical example of the Middle Paleoindian subperiod. Experts are divided over whether the type predates or postdates the Clovis point but have noted that the two share similarities in their construction. Suwanee specimens are generally unfluted, which distinguishes them from the generally fluted Clovis. However, a few rare examples of fluted Suwanee have also been discovered.
