Sutter County Library
Sutter County Library (formerly called the Sutter County Free Library) is a public library system that serves the residents of Sutter County, California. It operates four branches throughout the county including the main branch located in Yuba City, California. The library celebrated its centennial in 2017. The library's original building was acquired, renovated and filled with books for use as a library at a cost of $6,437.00 in 1927 when the county's population was 10,115. The funds came from the county's general fund and school budgets. In 2017 the library had over 40,000 cardholders, and the population of Sutter County as of 2010 was 94,737. The Sutter County library system offers a wide range of programs, including literacy programs, citizenship and English literacy classes for immigrants applying for naturalization, and children's activities including programs that help them gain reading skills. Sutter County is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 99,633. The county seat is Yuba City. Sutter County is included in the Yuba City, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Sacramento-Roseville, CA Combined Statistical Area. The county is located along the Sacramento River in the Sacramento Valley. History The Maidu were the people living in the area of Sutter County when European settlers arrived. Sutter County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Parts of the county were given to Placer County in 1852. Yuba City (Maidu: ''Yubu'') is a city in Northern California and the county seat of Sutter County, California, United States. The population was 70,117 at the 2020 census. Yuba City is the principal city of the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Sutter County and Yuba County. The metro area's population is 164,138. It is the 21st largest metropolitan area in California, ranked behind Redding and Chico. Its metropolitan statistical area is part of the Greater Sacramento CSA. The ''Appeal-Democrat'' is a daily broadsheet newspaper printed in Marysville, California, United States. It has an estimated circulation of 13,000 copies a day, primarily in Yuba and Sutter counties. The paper also is sold in Colusa County to the west and Butte County to the north. History The ''Appeal-Democrat'' formed from the 1926 merger of two earlier newspapers, the ''Marysville Appeal'' (founded in 1860) and the ''Marysville Evening Democrat'' (founded in 1884). R.C. Hoiles, who built the Freedom Communications newspaper chain around the Santa Ana paper that became the Orange County Register, bought the ''Appeal-Democrat'' in 1946 and placed his son-in-law Robert C. Live Oak is an incorporated city in Sutter County, California, United States. It is part of the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area within the Greater Sacramento CSA, and includes a hamlet historically named Stafford. The population was 8,392 at the 2010 census. Sutter, formerly South Butte and Sutter City, is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sutter County, California, United States. It is part of the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area within the Greater Sacramento CSA. The population as of the 2010 census was 2,904, up from 2,885 at the 2000 census. History Originally a settlement called South Butte, established in the vicinity of the stage station at Butte House east of the current town. It had a post office from August 7, 1871, until December 17, 1878, and from February 18, 1879, to January 20, 1888, when it was moved to the new Sutter City Post Office nearby. The Sutter Cemetery originally South Butte Cemetery, lay to the west on the stage road, and beside it was the school house, that was dismissed when there was a funeral.
