Suresnes () is a commune in the western inner suburbs of Paris, France. Located in Hauts-de-Seine, from the centre of Paris, it had a population of 49,482 as of 2020. Suresnes borders the Bois de Boulogne in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, across the Seine. Its neighbouring communes are Nanterre, Puteaux, Rueil-Malmaison and Saint-Cloud. Suresnes's landmarks include the Mémorial de la France combattante, where an annual ceremony is held on 18 June, as well as Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial nearby, below Fort Mont-Valérien, in addition to Foch Hospital in the town centre. Suresnes American Cemetery And Memorial
The Suresnes American Cemetery ( French: ''Cimetière américain de Suresnes'') is a United States military cemetery in Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine, France. It is the resting place of 1,541 American soldiers killed in World War I. A panoramic view of Paris can be seen from the site, which is located high on the slopes of Mont-Valérien. History Cemetery Originally a World War I cemetery, designed in 1922 on Boulevard Washington by French architect Jacques Gréber, Suresnes American Cemetery now shelters the remains of U.S. dead of both World Wars. The cemetery contains the remains of 1,541 Americans who died in World War I and 24 Unknown dead of World War II. The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine, in the western suburbs of Paris, standing on Rue Carnot. It has been included on the '' Inventaire général des monuments'' by the French Ministry of Culture since 1995. History The first town hall was located at the corner of Place Henri-IV and Rue Émile-Zola and was used by the mayor, Martin-François Bougault, and other local officials from 1789 to 1792. The second town hall was described as "flottante" (floating) and was probably the home of the mayor of the day. Fort Mont-Valérien ( French: ''Forteresse du Mont-Valérien'') is a fortress in Suresnes, a western Paris suburb, built in 1841 as part of the city's ring of modern fortifications. It overlooks the Bois de Boulogne. History Before Adolphe Thiers built the fortress, Mont Valérien was home to hermits. Mémorial De La France Combattante
The Mémorial de la France combattante (Memorial to Fighting France) is the most important memorial to French fighters of World War II (1939–1945). It is situated below Fort Mont-Valérien in Suresnes, in the western suburbs of Paris. It commemorates members of the armed forces from France and the colonies, and members of the French Resistance. Fifteen representative French fighters were buried here in an elaborate ceremony on 11 November 1945. The present memorial was opened on 18 June 1960. It has a wall in which are set sixteen bronze reliefs that represent in allegorical terms the different phases, places and participants in the struggle. At first the memorial made no reference to the victims who had been executed at the Fort Mont-Valérien, which had been frequently used by German forces to execute resistance fighters and hostages. Puteaux () is a commune in the western suburbs of Paris, France. It is located in the heart of the Hauts-de-Seine department, from the centre of Paris.
