Suplee, Oregon
Suplee is an unincorporated historic community in eastern Crook County, Oregon, United States. It was located about east of Paulina, near the Crook- Grant county line. The Suplee area was settled by people of French and Métis descent from the French Prairie area in Marion County, including the great-granddaughter of Étienne Lucier. When Suplee post office was established in 1894, resident Charles Dorling suggested the name "Suplee," his mother's maiden name. Originally in Grant County, the office was moved west to Crook County in 1902. The post office ran intermittently, closing for good in 1943, with mail to Paulina. As of 1972, author Ralph Friedman said there was nothing left at the old townsite, although there were still a few ranch buildings in the area. At one time there was a Suplee School (). Métis
The Métis ( ; Canadian ) are Indigenous peoples who inhabit Canada's three Prairie Provinces, as well as parts of British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and the Northern United States. The Geological Society of America (GSA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of the geosciences. History The society was founded in Ithaca, New York, in 1888 by Alexander Winchell, John J. Stevenson, Charles H. Hitchcock, John R. Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at Earth's surface, followed by cementation. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause these particles to settle in place. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD), officially known (in state law) as the State Parks and Recreation Department, is the government agency of the U.S. state of Oregon which operates its system of state parks. In addition, it has programs to protect and provide public access to natural and historic resources within the state, including the State Historic Preservation Office, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, recreation trails, the Ocean Shores Recreation Area, scenic waterways and the Willamette River Greenway. Ralph Friedman (June 3, 1916 – June 3, 1995) was an American author best known for his books about Oregon. Ralph Friedman was born and raised in Chicago. He hitchhiked to Oregon in 1933 at the age of 16. He wrote 10 books, and contributed to many other books, magazines, and newspapers. The ''Central Oregonian'' is a twice-weekly newspaper published in Prineville in the U.S. state of Oregon. Tracing its roots to 1881, the paper covers Central Oregon where it is the newspaper of record for Crook County. In 1921, a merger of the Prineville ''Call'' and the Crook County ''Journal'' formed the ''Central Oregonian''. The ''Journal'' had previously absorbed the Mitchell ''Monitor''. Doris Donnelly owned the Central Oregonian prior to Elmo Smith. Étienne Lucier
Étienne Lucier, né Lussier, (June 9, 1786 – March 8, 1853) was a French-Canadian fur trader active primarily in the Pacific Northwest. He was hired by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company and sent to the region to help establish Fort Astoria. Later he became a settler in the Willamette Valley. Lucier attended the Champoeg Meetings and was one of few French-Canadians or "Canadiens" to vote for the Provisional Government of Oregon, an American and Canadian civil authority for the valley. He is credited with becoming the first European descendant farmer within the modern state of Oregon. Early life Étienne Lucier was born on June 9, 1786 at Boucherville in Chambly County, Quebec.
