Supermercados Selectos is a Puerto Rican supermarket company. It is one of a number of well-known Puerto Rican supermarkets chains, along with Pueblo Supermarkets and others. History The first four Supermercados Selectos stores opened in 1978, after Carlos Torres, a Puerto Rican businessman, took the initiative of organizing a number of small mom-and-pop (" colmado") stores group into one integrated company, in order to compete against larger supermarkets. Pueblo is a Puerto Rican supermarkets chain. It has been one of Puerto Rico's major supermarket chains since 1955. History The brainchild of brothers Harold Toppel and George Toppel, sons of Russian immigrant parents, Pueblo began as a single store operation on Roosevelt Avenue in the Puerto Nuevo section of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The success of the first store led the Toppels to open 43 other Pueblo Supermarkets around the Island and, by 1960, to convert the enterprise into a public company that began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1963, Pueblo expanded beyond Puerto Rico's shores to the US Virgin Islands. Pueblo opened stores in St. Thomas and St. Croix. Supermercados Econo is a Puerto Rican supermarket chain. As of 2021, it has 64 stores in 49 municipalities across the country. Singer Bad Bunny previously worked at an Econo supermarket. History Supermercados Econo started operations in 1970 and its headquarters are in Carolina. The chain's first store was opened by Facundo Colon, a Puerto Rican businessman, at Hato Rey. In 1978, a store was opened at Plaza Carolina, a large mall in Carolina. The Plaza Carolina location is still open. In March 2020 the supermarket chain announced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the first hour of operation would be exclusively for elderly customers. In 2020 the chain celebrated its 50th anniversary by giving out $200,000 in cash prizes. During 2022, several allegations were made against the supermarket concerning their sales of meat and refrigerated products, including that their Aguadilla location was selling old, rotten meats.
