The UNT Coliseum is a 9,797-seat multi-purpose arena located in Denton, Texas, United States, built in 1973. While the arena's formal name is the UNT Coliseum, the building is more commonly referred to as the Super Pit, a nickname derived from its proximity to the former home of the Mean Green basketball teams, the Ken Bahnsen Gym, nicknamed the ''Snake Pit''. Most signage inside the stadium uses the Super Pit name; the most prominent usage of the UNT Coliseum name is above a single new set of ticket windows added during 2017 renovations. Denton is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Denton County, Texas, Denton County. North Texas Mean Green (formerly North Texas Eagles) represents the University of North Texas (UNT) in intercollegiate athletics. The teams compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). North Texas competed in the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA before joining the American Athletic Conference on July 1, 2023. UNT's official school colors are Green and White. North Texas' mascot is an Eagle named Scrappy. Nickname The name "Mean Green" was adopted by fans and media in 1966 for a North Texas football defensive squad that finished the season second in the nation against the rush. Billy Buie Blakeley (June 13, 1934 – October 27, 2010) was an American basketball coach. He coached at the high school, college, and professional levels. Coaching career High school (1957–1966) Blakeley served as the head basketball coach for most of the 1957 season at Blackwell High School. Blakeley resigned on January 18, 1957. He worked as an assistant basketball coach at St. Mark's of Texas from 1957 to 1958. He became the head coach at St. Mark's next season and served there until 1966. Blakeley won four State Championships. He also served as the head tennis coach while at St. Mark's, compiling an unprecedented record of 203–2 over 9 seasons. Ken Bahnsen Gym, formerly known as the Men's Gymnasium, is a 5,000-seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, United States. The Men's Gymnasium was home court for the North Texas Mean Green men's basketball team since the arena opened in 1950 until moving to the Super Pit in 1973. The ''Denton Record-Chronicle'' is a community newspaper and the main source of local news online for residents of the City of Denton, Texas and Denton County. Controlled by Denton Media Company until 2023, it also publishes the bimonthly ''Denton County Magazine''. On August 7, 2023, it was announced that public radio station KERA acquired ''Denton Record-Chronicle''. History William C.
