Sulkavan Suursoudut
Sulkavan Suursoudut (English: ) is Finland's biggest rowing race, held every July in Sulkava, Southern Savonia, Eastern Finland. It is organised by the Sulkava Association. The 1st race was held in 1968. History The first competition was held in 1968 with 38 competitors. The winner was 67-year-old Einari Luukkonen in a time of 8 hours, 29 minutes, and 40 seconds. The boats used in competitions are Finnish traditional style wooden rowing boats, normally now made of plywood. Since 1984 there have been competitions in 40 foot 'church-boats', 14 seat craft plus a cox that were traditionally used in church trips. Today the four-day competition involves approximately 8000 rowers with roughly 20,000 people visiting to watch the race. Partalansaari
Partalansaari is an island located in lake Saimaa. A large portion of the island belongs to the municipality of Sulkava while a smaller part belongs to Puumala. The island is surrounded by the largest watersheds — on the east is Lepistönselkä, on the northwest is Enonvesi and on the southwest Haapaselkä. There are more than 80 lakes and ponds within the island and the largest are lakes Kulkemusjärvi and Saajuu. The island has a road connection to the mainland. The villages that are covered by the municipality of Sulkava are Kaartilankoski in the north, Karjulanmäki in the west and Auvila in the southeast. Puumala includes the villages of Keriniemi and Kietävälä. The island has approximately 400 permanent residents. There are a lot of summer residents as well. Albin Savola
Albin Savola (26 July 1867, Sulkava – 8 December 1934, Forssa) was a Finnish priest and missionary, who served as one of the first Finnish missionaries in Ovamboland and published literature in the Oshindonga language. Life stages Savola was born in Sulkava Kaipola village into a miller's family. His father was Abraham Popoff and his mother was Leena Kaisa Karppinen. In 1890 Savola started the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission missionary school. From the school he was sent mission field, where he arrived in 1893. Savola worked at the Oniipa missionary station; as a layman, he was assigned the task of developing cotton cultivation in Ovamboland and fabric production. Savola became engaged to Eedla Nikkinen, who travelled to Ovamboland in 1896. The couple were married immediately upon arrival in Namibia. Timo Aulis Rautiainen (born 25 January 1963, in Sulkava, Finland) is a Finland, Finnish heavy metal music, heavy metal singer, guitarist and songwriter. He is best known as the singer and songwriter of Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus. He has also sung and played guitar in the bands Lyijykomppania and Aku Ankkuli. Career Rautiainen graduated from the University of Jyväskylä as a teacher of special education. In the early stages of Trio Niskalaukaus, Rautiainen was commonly represented in the main media as "The Grim Teacher", because of his strong and rather gloomy lyrics and his occupation. Ruokolahti (; ; literally translated the " Reed Bay") is a municipality of Finland, situated in south-eastern Finland, in the region of South Karelia.
