Stuart Lewis-Evans
Stuart Nigel Lewis-Evans (20 April 1930 – 25 October 1958) was a British racing driver, who competed in Formula One at 14 Grands Prix from to . Born in Luton and raised in Kent, Lewis-Evans served in the Royal Corps of Signals before starting his racing career in 1951, driving a Cooper 500. After winning the non-championship 1957 Glover Trophy, he debuted in Formula One at the with Connaught. Lewis-Evans contested five further Grands Prix in with Vanwall, taking his maiden pole position at the before retiring with engine issues. Retaining his seat for , Lewis-Evans also retired from pole at the , before taking his maiden podiums in Belgium and Portugal. During the season-ending at Ain-Diab, Lewis-Evans collided with a barrier after an engine seizure, suffering fatal burns. 1958 Belgian Grand Prix
The 1958 Belgian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 15 June 1958 at Spa-Francorchamps. It was race 5 of 11 in the 1958 World Championship of Drivers and race 4 of 10 in the 1958 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. The race was the 19th Belgian Grand Prix and it was held over 24 laps of the 14 kilometre circuit for a race distance of 339 kilometres. Summary The Belgian Grand Prix returned to the calendar after being off the calendar the previous year, and the 8.7 mile Spa circuit had been slightly modified. The pits had been rebuilt, the pit straight had been widened and straightened and the entire track had been resurfaced. The race distance had been shortened from 36 to 24 laps. Connaught Type B
The Connaught Type B was a racing car made by Connaught Engineering of England used in Formula One racing between 1955 and 1958. Although not a success in the Formula One World Championship, it became the first British car since 1924 to win a Continental European motor race when Tony Brooks won the non-championship 1955 Syracuse Grand Prix. Development history Connaught had intended to build a streamlined Grand Prix car based around the 2.5-litre Coventry Climax FPE 'Godiva' engine. When that project was abandoned, Connaught instead switched to using the Alta straight 4 engine. The streamliner design was rejected as impractical, the drivers complaining of similar problems to that of the Mercedes-Benz W196 streamliner, in that they were unable to place the car accurately at the apex of bends. Francis Beart
Francis Beart (6 March 1905 – 13 March 1983) was an English racing motor cyclist and motor cycle tuner, and later known also for tuning Formula Three racing cars. During World War II he worked as an engineer for the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Beart's bikes won eleven Manx GP wins, ten 2nds and three 3rds. Brooklands During the 1930s, Beart became a regular competitor at the Brooklands, Surrey circuit. In 1937 he moved into a small workshop, described by The Motor Cycle as a 'shack' on the circuit and set about tuning engines for other people. In 1936, Beart, on a Grindlay Peerless fitted with a 500cc speedway type J.A.P. engine, established the all-time Test Hill Record of 6.99 seconds (an average of 34.55 mph). A despatch rider (or dispatch) is a military messenger, mounted on horse or motorcycle (and occasionally in Egypt during World War I, on camels). Conscription In The United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, military conscription has existed for two periods in modern times. The first was from 1916 to 1920, and the second from 1939 to 1960. The last conscription term ended in 1963 although many soldiers chose to continue in the service beyond 1963.
