Strynø Kalv
Strynø Kalv is a small privately owned Danish island in the South Funen Archipelago, lying west of Strynø. Strynø Kalv covers an area of 0.458 km2. A large part of the island remains in its natural state with farm animals grazing. Strynø kalv has since 1970 been uninhabited, but in 1921 its population was 27. The five Regions of Denmark () were created as administrative entities at a level above the municipalities and below the central government in the public sector as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, when the 13 Counties of Denmark, counties (''Amt (country subdivision), amter'') were abolished. At the same time, the number of municipalities (''Commune (country subdivision), kommuner'') was cut from 270 (Ærø Municipality, from 271 in 2006) to Municipalities of Denmark, 98. The reform was approved and made into a law by the lawmakers in the Folketing 26 June 2005 with 2005 Danish local elections, elections to the 98 municipalities and 5 regions being held Tuesday 15 November 2005. The archipelago of Ertholmene is not part of any municipality or region but is administered by the Ministry of Defence. The Region of Southern Denmark (, ; , ; ) is an administrative region of Denmark established on Monday 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, which abolished the traditional counties ("amter") and set up five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 270 ( 271 before 2006) before 1 January 2007 to 98. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favor of the local level and the central government in Copenhagen. The Region of Southern Denmark has 22 municipalities. Strynø
Strynø is a small Danish island lying west of Langeland, north-east of Ærø, and south of Tåsinge in the South Funen Archipelago. A constituent part of Langeland municipality, Strynø covers an area of 4.88 km2. The population of the island on 1 January 2025 was 216. In 1906, the population peaked, with 787 people living on the island. In 2022 Strynø won the prize "Island of the year" ''(Årets ø''). Geography Strynø was formed by gletchers during the Weichselian glaciation. The highest point on the island is 10 metres above sea level. There are many farms on the island, of which most practice organic farming. In 2024, there were 15 certified organic farms on Strynø. West of Strynø lies the uninhabited island of Strynø Kalv that together with Strynø and other minor islands form . The European fire-bellied toad (''Bombina bombina'') is a species of fire-bellied toad native to eastern parts of mainland Europe, where it can be found near waterbodies such as ponds and marshes. It is known for its red colored belly used to ward off predators, an example of aposematism, and its distinctive "whoop" call. Description The European fire-bellied toad is a medium sized frog, growing up to approximately . The dorsal coloration can vary from gray to brown to green, while the stomach is red with thick black mottling. The backs of these frogs are covered in warts. When threatened by a predator, the fire-bellied toad will lift up its arms (sometimes flipping over) to expose its red coloration and show off its toxicity to the potential predator. This is a list of islands of Denmark. Overview There are around 1400 islands in Denmark, where about 409 of the islands are named, not including the Faroe Islands or Greenland. Some 70 of them are populated while the rest are uninhabited. Some of the uninhabited islands have only become uninhabited in recent decades, for economic reasons, as lighthouses and other publicly run facilities either became automated, or relocated to main islands or Jutland peninsula. Others became uninhabited as living costs outpaced income for the often fewer than 10 locals. Definition Different lists of Danish islands vary, depending on how the word "island" is defined. According to the official Danish Government definition, an "island" needs to be surrounded by water at least one-half metre deep, and also to have land vegetation.
