Street Fair
A street fair celebrates the character of a neighborhood. As its name suggests, it is typically held on the main street of a neighborhood. The principal component of street fairs are booths used to sell goods (particularly food) or convey information. Some include carnival rides and parades. Many have live music and dance demonstrations. Fairs typically range no more than a few blocks long, although some fairs, such as the 9th Avenue International Food Festival in New York City and the Solano Stroll in Northern California, extend more than a mile. A fair only one block long is commonly called a block party. Variety Street fairs vary greatly in character, even within one city. Castro Street Fair
The 'Castro Street Fair'' is a San Francisco LGBT street festival and fair usually held on the first Sunday in October in the The Castro, Castro neighborhood, the main gay neighborhood and social center in the city. The fair features multiples stages with live entertainment, DJs, food vendors, community-group stalls as well as a curated artisan alley with dozens of Northern California artists. Due to community pressure the fair restructured the organization and partnered with local charities to collect gate donations and partner with groups at the beverages booths to raise money for those charities. The Castro Street Fair was founded by Harvey Milk, and the group he led, the Castro Valley Association, in 1974. It attracted over 5,000 people. The event's popularity grew quickly and by 1977, the attendance reached 70,000. The influx of visitors helped promote the Castro district's growing tourist industry. Boishakhi Mela
The Boishakhi Mela () is a Bengali culture, Bengali celebration (mela) which takes place outside of Bangladesh. It is celebrated by the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada as well as many other countries with significant Bangladeshi populations. In London, it takes place across the area of Banglatown in London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Tower Hamlets. The festival runs through Brick Lane to Weavers Fields and Allen Gardens in Bethnal Green. Braderie De Lille
The Lille Braderie (''French: Braderie de Lille'') is a braderie, or annual street market/flea market, that takes place on the weekend of the first Sunday of September in Lille, France, in the northern Hauts-de-France region. It dates back to the 12th century, attracting nearly three million visitors each year. The ''Braderie de Lille'' is one of the largest gatherings in France and the largest flea market in Europe. In 2014 the Braderie was reported to host 100km of market stalls to over 10,000 exhibitors. During the Braderie, the city hosts a music festival. The traditional food eaten during the festival, moules-frites, typically results in built-up heaps of mussel shells around the city. Atlantic Antic
The Atlantic Antic is a street festival held yearly on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York between 4th Avenue and Hicks Street. It is run and produced by the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC). The festival features food and craft stands, booths representing companies and local nonprofits, live music, and other entertainment. In 2006, some 300 vendors and 300,000 people attended; in 2009, roughly 600 vendors and over a million people were estimated to have attended. The fair has occurred each fall since 1974, except for 2001, when Mayor Rudy Giuliani canceled all NYC parades and fairs following the September 11 attacks; 2002, when a city policy on street closure prevented the AALDC from holding the fair and 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Braderie
A braderie () or jaarmarkt (, respectively meaning 'roasting' and 'annual market' in Dutch) is a type of grand yearly street fair and street market found in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Northern France and north-west Switzerland, mostly held in the summer months. Hawaiian Dance
Hula () is a Hawaiian dance form expressing chant (''oli'') or song ( ''mele''). It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Native Hawaiians who settled there. The hula dramatizes or portrays the words of the oli or mele in a visual dance form. There are many sub-styles of hula, with the two main categories being Hula ʻAuana and Hula Kahiko.
