Straßberg, Saxony-Anhalt
Straßberg is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 August 2009, it is part of the town Harzgerode. Straßberg is located in southeastern part of the Harz mountains, 20 km south of Quedlinburg, 22 km northeast of Nordhausen and 23 km northwest of Sangerhausen. History Straßberg was mentioned for the first time in the chronicle for the district of Sangerhausen in 1194 as ''Strazberc''. From 1400 mining became the main livelihood for the villagers of Straßberg. Today, they preserve its mining history and look after their history and conserve the village for those seeking relaxation the past. Even agriculture flourishes despite the rather difficult natural environment. On 1 August 2009 the municipality of Straßberg agreed with the towns of Güntersberge and Harzgerode as well as the villages of Dankerode, Königerode, Schielo and Siptenfelde to be incorporated into the new borough of Harzgerode. Stolberg (Harz)
is a town (sometimes itself called 'Harz' in historical references) and a former municipality in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz, in the German State of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is situated in the southern part of the Harz mountains, about west of Sangerhausen, and northeast of Nordhausen. Since 1 September 2010, it has been part of the municipality of Südharz. History Stolberg was established as a settlement for miners in around AD 1000, although there is evidence of mining in the area as far back as 794. The name is derived from the German words ''Stollen'' = "ininggallery" and ''Berg'' = "hill". Iron, copper, silver, tin and gold were extracted there. Glasebach Pit
The Glasebach Pit (german: Grube Glasebach) is a mining museum and former pit in the Harz fluorspar mining area near Straßberg in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It is run by the East Harz Mining Society (''Montanverein Ostharz e. V.''). The pit was founded under the name of ''Vertrau auf Gott'' ("Trust in God"). The mining industry in the area around Straßberg goes back to the time around the year 1400. At Heidelberg north of Straßberg, fluorite and silver were won and processed at a smeltery on the site on behalf of the counts of Stolberg. There was also flourishing mining activity on the Glasebach stream, which formed the boundary between the County of Stolberg and the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg. After being abandoned for a while, mining restarted in the 18th century and continued, with interruptions, until the 1960s.
