Stranglers
The Stranglers are an English rock band formed in 1974. Scoring 23 UK top 40 singles and 20 UK top 40 albums to date in a career spanning five decades, the Stranglers are one of the longest-surviving bands to have originated in the UK punk scene. Formed as the Guildford Stranglers in Guildford, Surrey, in early 1974, they originally built a following within the mid-1970s pub rock scene. While their aggressive, no-compromise attitude had them identified by the media with the emerging UK punk rock scene that followed, their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre, and the group went on to explore a variety of musical styles, from new wave, art rock and gothic rock through the sophisti-pop of some of their 1980s output. Dave Greenfield
David Paul Greenfield (29 March 1949 – 3 May 2020) was an English keyboardist, singer and songwriter who was a member of rock band the Stranglers. He joined the band in 1975, within a year of its formation, and played with them for 45 years until his death. Early life and education Greenfield was born on 29 March 1949 in the south coast seaside resort of Brighton. He learnt guitar from an older schoolmate and, after leaving school, played for a year in bands at American bases in Germany. Career Greenfield tried to develop a music career in Germany, and played in bands in Britain as well as Germany while also working in his father's printing business and as a piano tuner. In Britain, his bands included the Initials, the Blue Maxi (on the single " Here Comes Summer", released by Major Minor Records in 1970), and progressive rock bands Rusty Butler and Credo. Jet Black
Brian John Duffy (26 August 1938 – 6 December 2022), known professionally as Jet Black, was an English drummer and founding member of punk rock/ new wave band the Stranglers. He last performed with the band in 2015, and officially retired in 2018. Early life Brian John Duffy was born in Ilford, Essex, on 26 August 1938. He was a successful businessman up until the mid-1970s, owning a fleet of ice cream vans and an off-licence in Guildford called The Jackpot, which was the base for the early Stranglers. He was also the owner of one of the earliest home brewing equipment companies, at a time when home brewing was in vogue. Paul Roberts (musician)
Paul Roberts (born 31 December 1959 in Chiswick, London) is an English singer who was the lead singer of The Stranglers between 1990 and 2006. Career The Stranglers Roberts replaced Hugh Cornwell in The Stranglers in 1990 and appeared on and co-wrote their studio albums '' Stranglers In the Night'', '' About Time'', '' Written in Red'', '' Coup de Grace'' and '' Norfolk Coast''. Roberts performed live as a non-playing frontman as The Stranglers recruited guitarist John Ellis and later Baz Warne to co-replace Cornwell, who sang vocals and played guitar. Roberts left The Stranglers after almost 16 years (believed to be longer than his predecessor, according to press quotes from his former colleagues) in May 2006. Baz Warne
Barry "Baz" Warne (born 25 March 1964 in Sunderland, England) is an English musician, best known as the current guitarist and vocalist of The Stranglers. Earlier in his career, he was the guitarist and frontman of numerous bands. His first recordings to be released were with the Sunderland punk band Toy Dolls, whom he joined as bassist in 1983. He toured extensively with them and recorded two singles before forming the Troubleshooters in 1985. The Troubleshooters released two singles before changing their name to the Smalltown Heroes in 1992. They released a number of singles including the world's first interactive CD-rom single, "Moral Judgement", which contained the band's history, the video for "Moral Judgement", and gig footage. Jean-Jacques Burnel
Jean-Jacques Burnel (born 21 February 1952) is an English musician, best known as the bass guitarist and co-lead vocalist with the punk rock band the Stranglers. He is the only original member to remain in the band. Life and career Burnel performing on French TV in 1983 Jean-Jacques Burnel was born in Notting Hill, London, to French parents. His family owned a restaurant where his father worked as a chef. As a child, as the son of French immigrants, he was often the victim of mockery from his schoolmates, which later led him to call himself John to disguise his French origins. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of music that emerged in late 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's fundamental elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Liberty Records
Liberty Records was a record label founded in the United States by chairman Simon Waronker in 1955 with Alvin Bennett as president and Theodore Keep as chief engineer. It was reactivated in 2001 in the United Kingdom and had two previous revivals. History 1950s Liberty's early releases focused on film and orchestral music. Its first single was Lionel Newman's "The Girl Upstairs". Its first big hit, in 1955, was by Julie London singing her version of the torch song, " Cry Me a River", which climbed to No. 9 in the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Hans Wärmling
Hans Axel Wärmling (22 July 1943 – 12 October 1995) was a Swedish musician and songwriter, and was a founding member and keyboardist of the British rock band the Stranglers. He co-wrote their 1982 UK Top 10 release " Strange Little Girl". He drowned in a boating accident in 1995. Early years The Jackie Fountains Hans Wärmling was the guitar player in a rhythm and blues band called the Jackie Fountains, that formed in 1964 and played in the Gnesta area of Sweden until 1967. Musical Genre
A music genre is a conventional category that identifies some pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. Punk Rock
Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with stripped-down instrumentation.
