Strachan Bethune
Strachan Bethune, (November 6, 1821 – March 8, 1910) twice Bâtonnier of Montreal and the 1st Anglican Chancellor of the Diocese of Montreal. Biography Born at Burnside Hall, Montreal, Strachan Bethune was the son of the Very Reverend John Bethune, Dean of Montreal and Principal of McGill University, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Hallowell (1771–1838), signing partner of the North West Company. He was named for his father's mentor John Strachan, and he was a great-grandson of the explorer Alexander Henry the elder. His uncles included Angus Bethune, James Gray Bethune, Bishop Alexander Neil Bethune, The Hon. Donald Bethune, Henry Mackenzie (cousin of the Canadian explorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie) and The Hon. John Kirby (Canadian Politician)
John Kirby (1772 – December 19, 1846) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Knaresborough, England in 1772 and arrived in the Fort Ticonderoga area of New York with his parents in 1774. His father moved to St. Johns (now Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu) in Lower Canada after the American Revolution. He later moved to Kingston, where he became a merchant, importing and exporting goods. In 1818, he was appointed magistrate in the Midland District. He owned shares in steamships on Lake Ontario and helped found and was later president of the Cataraqui Bridge Company. He also served as director for the Bank of Upper Canada and the Commercial Bank of the Midland District. He was also an active supporter of the Church of England. Uppark is a 17th-century house in South Harting, West Sussex, England. It is a Grade I listed building and a National Trust property. History The house, set high on the South Downs, was built for Ford Grey (1655—1701), the first Earl of Tankerville, ''circa'' 1690, the architect is believed to have been William Talman. The estate was sold in 1747 to Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh and his wife Sarah. Matthew and Sarah redecorated the house extensively from 1750 to 1760 and introduced most of the existing collection of household items displayed today, much of it collected on their Grand Tour of 1749 to 1751. Sir Richard Stuart Lake, (July 10, 1860 – April 23, 1950) was an English-born Canadian territorial provincial and federal level politician from Saskatchewan, Canada. John Abbott
Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott (March 12, 1821 – October 30, 1893) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the third prime minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. He held office as the leader of the Conservative Party. Abbott was born in what is now Saint-André-d'Argenteuil, Quebec.
