Stockport, South Australia
Stockport is a small town north of Adelaide and south of Tarlee in South Australia. It was laid out on section 1283, Hundred of Light, South Australia, Hundred of Light in 1845 by Samuel Stocks junior, naming it for his birthplace, Stockport in Cheshire (now Greater Manchester), England. On the southern boundary of the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council area, it was once the heart of a small farming community. Stockport was a stop on the Peterborough railway line which opened past Stockport in 1869, connecting it to Adelaide. The line closed in the 2000s. Stockport today boasts a number of old stone homes, mixed with a number of new residences. At the , Stockport had a population of 234. Samuel Stocks Junior
Samuel Stocks, jun. ( – 3 February 1850) was a businessman in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. His father, also named Samuel Stocks, was also a businessman and arrived in South Australia a few months after his son. Samuel Stocks, jun. was born in Stockport, Cheshire and arrived in Adelaide on the ''Glenarm'' on 1 December 1842 and immediately plunged into the business world of the young Colony. It was at a time of economic gloom but he invested heavily in the South Australian Mining Association which was prospecting for copper at Burra, north of Adelaide. Their company (nicknamed "Snobs" – Captain Allen and Messrs. An adventure park is a place which can contain a wide variety of elements, including but not limited to, rope climbing exercises, obstacle courses, bouldering, rock climbing, target oriented activities, and zip-lines. Astronomical Society Of South Australia
The Astronomical Society of South Australia (ASSA) was founded in 1892 and is the oldest society of its kind in Australia. It is the only representative body for amateur astronomy in the state of South Australia. It holds regular general monthly meetings, frequent meetings for members of specialised groups and has available two observatories, one with a 300mm telescope at The Heights School within easy reach of Adelaide and used primarily for public viewing, and a second at Stockport with 500mm and 450mm telescopes presently in service and a larger 36-inch instrument currently being considered. Membership The ASSA has approximately 500 members. People of all ages are able to join.
