Stockholm Archipelago
The Stockholm Archipelago () is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea (the largest being the Archipelago Sea across the Baltic in Finland). Part of the archipelago has been designated as a Ramsar site since 1989. Stockholm Archipelago has been found to have slightly over 24,000 islands, islets and skerries and covers approximately 1,700 km² of which approximately 530 km² is land. There are around 10,000 permanent residences and 50,000 holiday homes in the archipelago. Residents are found on all the larger islands closest to the coast that have fixed bridges or ferry connections with road ferries, such as Vaxholm, Ingarö, Värmdö, Yxlan, Blidö, Ljusterö and Väddö, but also on many of the larger islands farther out from the coast, as Ingmarsö, Möja, Runmarö, Nämdö, Ornö and Utö, which are served by passenger ships with fixed itineraries. Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that is enclosed by the countries of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden, and the North European Plain, North and Central European Plain regions. It is the world's largest brackish water basin. The sea stretches from 53°N to 66°N latitude and from 10°E to 30°E longitude. It is a Continental shelf#Shelf seas, shelf sea and marginal sea of the Atlantic with limited water exchange between the two, making it an inland sea. The Baltic Sea drains through the Danish straits into the Kattegat by way of the Øresund, Great Belt and Little Belt. It includes the Gulf of Bothnia (divided into the Bothnian Bay and the Bothnian Sea), the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga and the Bay of Gdańsk. Utö (Finland)
Utö () is a small island in the Archipelago Sea in the Baltic Sea and belongs to Finland's Pargas municipality. It is the southernmost year-round inhabited island in Finland. Utö has an area of and the population was 40 (). Name The name of the island, ''Utö'', means "outer island" in Swedish. Description The island has a lighthouse, pilot station, a small guest harbour, a shop and a post office. The island is also known from the marine weather observations that began in 1881. Due to the remoteness of the island, the island has its own local school. In former times, the Finnish Defence Forces kept a small station on the island, but left the island in 2005. The island is also known as the first rescue station of the Estonia disaster in September 1994, and also helped rescue the survivors of the SS Park Victory sinking. Ornö
Ornö is the largest island in the southern half of the Stockholm archipelago, situated just north of the island of Utö. It belongs to the municipality of Haninge. The island is approx. 15 km long and 3–4 km wide. The primary connection with the mainland, a car ferry line, is operated by ''Ornö Sjötrafik''. This is a community owned company. The ferry goes between Dalarö on the mainland and ''Hässelmara'' on north-western Ornö. There are some 300 people living on the island all year round. During summer, the number of people on the island multiplies. Each year by the end of may, the largest sailing competition in the Stockholm archipelago takes place around the island. Runmarö
Runmarö is an island located in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. The island is known for its many species of orchids (at least 27 different kinds) and 9 marshy lakes. Ingmarsö
Ingmarsö is an island located in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. The westernmost part of Ingmarsö consists of the Brottö peninsula. Today, Ingmarsö has around 150 permanent residents and around thirty companies, including a boatyard, resturaunt, shop with pharmacy, system and postal agents, home bakery, carpenters and other entrepreneurs. The island has no road connection with the mainland, but is serviced by Waxholmsbolaget and boat taxis to two regular jetties: Ingmarsö Södra and Ingmarsö Norra. Väddö
Väddö is an island in the Baltic Sea in Roslagen district, Sweden. It is situated in Norrtälje Municipality. Together with the adjoined Björkö it is considered the seventh largest island of Sweden. Väddö is separated from the mainland by the artificial Väddö Canal, first dug in the 16th century. Blidö
Blidö is an island in the northern Stockholm archipelago "roslagen" and a part of the Norrtälje Municipality. Its northernmost point is called Kråknäset. There is a car ferry to neighboring Yxlan and ferries to Stockholm, as well as an ICA grocery store. Linkudden Nature Reserve is located on the southeast of the island with lovely nature and seaside cliffs. Journalist and author Ture Nerman owned a summer house on Blidö from 1919 until 1969. Yxlan is an island in the north of Stockholm archipelago and Norrtälje Municipality, Norrtälje municipality. The island is reachable from the mainland by car ferries. Yxlan is located between the islands of Furusund and Blidö. There is a school and a little store on the island, other services are found on Blidö. Vaxholm Municipality
Vaxholm Municipality (, semi-officially ) is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. The municipal slogan is "Vaxholm – the capital of the archipelago", due to its central location in the archipelago. Its seat is located in the city of Vaxholm. From 1974 to 1984 Vaxholm was united with Österåker Municipality, making up a municipality called Vaxholm, but with the seat in Åkersberga. After the "divorce" the new Vaxholm Municipality came out larger than it had been before the amalgamation. The municipality prefers to style itself ''City of Vaxholm''.
