The Stockholm Archipelago Trail is a hiking path network spanning approximately 270 kilometers (170 miles) across 20 islands of the Stockholm Archipelago in Sweden. Stockholm Archipelago
The Stockholm Archipelago () is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea (the largest being the Archipelago Sea across the Baltic in Finland). Part of the archipelago has been designated as a Ramsar site since 1989. Stockholm Archipelago has been found to have slightly over 24,000 islands, islets and skerries and covers approximately 1,700 km² of which approximately 530 km² is land. There are around 10,000 permanent residences and 50,000 holiday homes in the archipelago. Residents are found on all the larger islands closest to the coast that have fixed bridges or ferry connections with road ferries, such as Vaxholm, Ingarö, Värmdö, Yxlan, Blidö, Ljusterö and Väddö, but also on many of the larger islands farther out from the coast, as Ingmarsö, Möja, Runmarö, Nämdö, Ornö and Utö, which are served by passenger ships with fixed itineraries. Sandhamn
Sandhamn (Swedish language, Swedish for "Sand Harbour") is a small settlement in the central-peripheral part of the Stockholm Archipelago at the 59th parallel northnord59.se in central-eastern Sweden. approximately 50 km (30 mi) east of Stockholm. Sandhamn is located on the island Sandön ("Sand Island"), which is, however, colloquially referred to as Sandhamn. Administratively, it is in Värmdö Municipality and Stockholm County. One of the most important natural ports in the archipelago with easy access to the Swedish capital, Sandhamn has been popular for pleasure boating since the late 19th century. It is known for its tavern, its clubhouse, and its harbour. While the settlement only has a hundred permanent inhabitants, the number of residents increases to 2-3,000 during the summer. Landsort
Landsort () is a Swedish village with a lighthouse on the island of Öja. The village has around 30 permanent residents. The tower was built in 1689, with an upper conical iron section added in 1870. Open fires, serving as beacons, have been lit at the site since early times. Landsort is the southernmost point of the Stockholm archipelago. Lighthouse The first lighthouse in the modern sense was lit in 1651 and, until the current tower was raised, a couple of different buildings were used to support the light. The tower of 1689 was constructed to carry an open fire, which burned coal. In 1840, a colza oil lamp was installed. A flame consumed paraffin from 1887 but in 1938 the beacon was electrified. Today the Swedish Maritime Administration owns and runs the lighthouse. During World War II and the Cold War, Landsort was a military base for the Swedish Coastal Artillery. Utö, Sweden
Utö is a small island in the southwestern part of the Stockholm archipelago, known for its nature. Utö means "outer island" in Swedish. It is a part of Haninge Municipality. Geology Utö and the surrounding islands are unique from a geological point of view and attract many people all-year round. Holmquistite is a kind of mineral that, in Sweden, can be found only on Utö and that is extremely rare globally with small occurrences in several countries in South America and Africa as well as in China, Australia, the USA and parts of Europe. It and many other kinds of minerals and stones are displayed at Utö Gruvmuseum, open daily in summertime in the afternoons. Geography Utö has the oldest iron-ore mines in Sweden.
