Stockbridge, Edinburgh
Stockbridge is a district of Edinburgh, located north of the city centre, bounded by the New Town, Edinburgh, New Town and by Comely Bank. The name is Scots ''stock brig'' from Anglic languages, Anglic ''stocc brycg'', meaning a timber bridge. Originally a small outlying village, it was incorporated into the City of Edinburgh in the 19th century. The current "Stock Bridge", built in 1801, is a stone structure spanning the Water of Leith. The painter Henry Raeburn (1756–1823) owned two adjoining estates, Deanhaugh and St Bernard's, which he developed with the assistance of the architect James Milne. Milne was also responsible for the fine St Bernard's Church (1823) in Saxe Coburg Street. Ann Street, designed by Raeburn and named after his wife, is a rare early example of a New Town street with private front gardens. Sara Stockbridge (born Sarah Jane Stockbridge; 14 November 1965) is an English model, actress and author. In the second half of the 1980s, she was the muse of fashion designer Vivenne Westwood. Early life Stockbridge was born in Woking, Surrey, England. Her father was a civil engineer. Sara and her brother spent their early childhood with their family living in Trinidad, Bahrain and Peru. Richard H. Stockbridge is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His contributions to research primarily involve stochastic control theory, optimal stopping and mathematical finance. Most notably, alongside Professors Thomas G. Kurtz, Kurt Helmes, and Chao Zhu, he developed the methodology of using linear programming to solve stochastic control problems. Nellie Stockbridge (1868 – May 22, 1965) was an American photographer known for documenting life in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District in Idaho. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, her work captured key aspects of the region’s social, cultural, and industrial history. Biography Stockbridge was born in 1868 in the United States, possibly in Illinois. In 1898, she joined Thomas N. Barnard, a photographer in Wallace, Idaho, to assist with photographic retouching. She moved to Wallace in 1899 and became an essential member of Barnard’s studio. By 1907, Stockbridge acquired partial ownership of the business. When Barnard was elected mayor of Wallace, she took over the studio's daily operations, eventually becoming its sole owner. Levi Stockbridge (March 13, 1820 – May 2, 1904) was a farmer and scientist from Hadley, Massachusetts. He was instrumental in the early history of the Massachusetts Agricultural College now known as the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Stockbridge War Memorial is a First World War memorial in the town of Stockbridge in Hampshire in southern England. The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1921; it is a grade II listed building. Background In the aftermath of the First World War and its unprecedented casualties, thousands of war memorials were built across Britain. Stockbridge School was a progressive co-educational boarding school for adolescents near the Interlaken section of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It operated from 1948 to 1976. History The school was founded by the World War II German refugee Hans Maeder and his American wife Ruth, who paid $60,000 to acquire the 1,100-plus acres of the former Gilded Age estate of Daniel Rhodes Hanna, son of Mark Hanna, businessman and politician. Maeder was a socialist and the couple wanted to establish a school based on egalitarian principles. At the time of the Maeders' purchase, the property contained 18 buildings and 2,500 feet (760 m) of frontage on the lake known as Stockbridge Bowl. The property had previously been named Bonnie Brier Farm. Stockbridge Racecourse
Stockbridge Racecourse was a horse racing venue in Hampshire, England which closed in 1898. History The first racing at Stockbridge took place on Houghton Down from, at the latest, 1775, and possibly earlier. By 1839 a new course had been developed on Danebury Hill near Nether Wallop. The course is associated with leading Victorian trainer John Day who, together with stable jockey Tom Cannon, sent out multiple Classic winners. He trained from stables at Danebury House, built in 1832 by Lord George Bentinck, adjacent to the track and now the headquarters of a winery. Another important, but short-lived figure in the history of the course was Harry, Marquis of Hastings who had horses trained at Stockbridge in the 1860s. A notable visitor to the track was King Edward VII, who whilst still Prince of Wales watched his horse, Counterpane, come last in the Stockbridge Cup and then fall down dead.
