Stijn Desmet
Stijn Desmet (born 10 April 1998) is a Belgian short track speed skater. Biography Desmet was born in Duffel, lives in Mechelen, and is the younger brother of short track speed skater and Olympic bronze medalist Hanne Desmet. Desmet started short track speed skating at a club in Wilrijk at the age of 10. In 2012, he was scouted by the Belgian short track national team coach Pieter Gysel to participate in the Sport Vlaanderen supported project "Be Gold" to train talented youth professionally in Hasselt, with the Winter Olympics as the main goal. Desmet is the Belgian record holder in the 500 meters. At the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, he won a gold medal in the mixed relay event in an international team, alongside Desmet consisting of Quentin Fercoq (France), Ane Farstad (Norway) and Kim Ji-yoo (South Korea). Duffel
Duffel () is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises only the town of Duffel proper. On 1 January 2020, Duffel had a total population of 17,664. The total area is 22.71 km² which gives a population density of 778 inhabitants per km². The area is namegiver to a certain type of coarse woolen cloth manufactured in this area from the 11th century, mainly used to make blankets, outdoor (army) coats and tot bags. Short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China. The events are scheduled to take place between 5 and 16 February 2022. A total of nine short track speed skating events will be held. In July 2018, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially added the mixed relay held over a distance of 2000 metres, increasing the total number of events to nine. Due to the addition of the event, the competition schedule was increased to six days from five. A total of 112 quota spots (56 per gender) were distributed to the sport, a decline of eight from the 2018 Winter Olympics. The 2021 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships were held from 5 to 7 March 2021 in Dordrecht, Netherlands. Criticism and controversies Many prominent countries didn’t attend or boycotted the world championship for various reasons, some related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as Japan, China and South Korea. The Netherlands, Italy, France, Hungary and Russia (as Russian Skating Union) were the only countries with all their top skaters and roster, hence raising the question of the validity of this world championship results. Some heats in preliminary rounds were misbalanced and tended to favour athletes of countries who were put in the same or easiest heats like Netherlands and Italy.
