Steyr (; ) is a statutory city (Austria), statutory city, located in the Austrian federal state of Upper Austria. It is the administrative capital, though not part of Steyr-Land District. Steyr is Austria's 12th most populated town and the 3rd largest city in Upper Austria. The city has a long history as a manufacturing center and has given its name to several manufacturers headquartered there, such as the former Steyr-Daimler-Puch conglomerate and its successor Steyr Motors GmbH, Steyr Motors. Geography The city is situated in the Traunviertel region, with the two rivers Steyr (river), Steyr and Enns (river), Enns flowing through it and meeting near the town centre beneath Lamberg Castle and St Michael's Church. This prominent location has made it prone to severe flooding through the centuries until the present, one of the worst cases being recently in 2002 European floods, August 2002. Steyr-Daimler-Puch
Steyr-Daimler-Puch () was a large manufacturing conglomerate based in Steyr, Austria, which was broken up in stages between 1987 and 2001. The component parts and operations continued to exist under separate ownership and new names. History The company, initially known as Josef und Franz Werndl and Company was founded in 1864 as a rifle manufacturer. The company began producing bicycles in 1894. It grew rapidly during the First World War, by the end of which it employed 14,000 people. Steyr automobiles were made after 1918. In September 1917 Steyr recruited Hans Ledwinka, now remembered as one of the great automobile engineers of the twentieth century, but then relatively unknown, to the position of "Chefkonstrukteur", to lead the creation of their automobile manufacturing business. Steyr Motors GmbH
Steyr Motors () is an Austrian manufacturer of diesel engines based in Steyr, Upper-Austria. History Steyr Motors originated in the diesel engine division of the earlier Steyr-Daimler-Puch group. In 2001, it became an independent company through an internal management buyout. In 2008, Steyr Motors presented the world's first parallel hybrid propulsion system for boats, STEYR HDS. In the same year, the company achieved numerous awards for this innovation (DAME Award at METS exhibition in Amsterdam and the National Marine Manufacturers Association's IBEX Award). Markus Vogl
Markus Vogl (born 27 November 1970) is an Austrian politician and former member of the National Council. A member of the Social Democratic Party, he represented Traunviertel from October 2013 to January 2021. Vogl was born on 27 November 1970 in Steyr. His early education was at boarding school as his mother was a single parent and a shift worker at Steyr plants. He worked for MAN Truck & Bus from 1991 to 2010 designing driver's cabs. He joined the works council at MAN in 2000 and served as its chairman from 2010 to 2019. He has been a member of the presidium of the Union of Private Sector Employees, Printing, Journalism, and Paper (GPA-DJP) since 2014 and chairman of the union's Upper Austrian branch since 2015. The Enns () is a southern tributary of the river Danube in Austria, joining northward at the city of Enns. It forms much of the border between the states of Lower Austria and Upper Austria. The Upper Austrian Prealps () is a mountain range in Austria which, according to the Categorisation of the Eastern Alps, covers the region between the valley of the Traun ( Gmunden) in the west and the Enns valley in the east, from Steyr in the north.
