Stew Morrill
Stewart Morrill (born July 25, 1952) is an American college basketball coach and the former head coach of the Utah State University men's basketball team. Biography Morrill was an All-American at Ricks College and a two-time All-Big Sky selection for Gonzaga University. He started his coaching career in 1974 as an assistant at Gonzaga, and continued at the University of Montana under Mike Montgomery in 1978. In the spring of 1986, he was promoted to head coach of the Grizzlies, and led them to an NCAA berth in 1991. Morrill coached at Colorado State University from 1991 to 1998 before resigning to go to Utah State. Morrill and Utah State gained national attention in March 2001 for their 77–68 upset of Ohio State in overtime in the NCAA tournament. On January 17, 2008, in an 82–78 victory over Boise State, Morrill logged his 226th Aggie victory, passing E. Lowell Romney to become the winningest coach in Utah State basketball history. San Jose State Spartans Men's Basketball
The San Jose State Spartans men's basketball team represents San José State University in NCAA Division I college basketball as a member of the Mountain West Conference. History The SJSU men's basketball team played its first recorded game in 1909. The team has won 10 conference championships, appeared in the NCAA tournament three times, appeared once in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), and twice in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). From the 1930s to 1976, the team played home games at the on-campus Spartan Gym. Starting in 1961, the team also played home games at the off-campus San Jose Civic Auditorium. The 2001 Big West Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 8–10 at Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Utah State defeated in the championship game, 71–66, to obtain the fourth Big West Conference men's basketball tournament championship in school history. The Aggies participated in the 2001 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament after earning the conference's automatic bid. 1991 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1991 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 14, 1991, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana. A total of 63 games were played. Duke, coached by Mike Krzyzewski, won a rematch of the previous year's national final matchup against undefeated UNLV 79–77 in the semifinal, then won the national title with a 72–65 victory in the final game over Kansas, coached by Roy Williams. This was the first national championship game for Williams as a head coach. Kansas defeated Williams' mentor Dean Smith and North Carolina (where Williams later coached) in the semifinal. Mike Montgomery (basketball)
Michael John Montgomery (born February 27, 1947) is a retired American basketball coach. He is best known for his 18-year tenure at Stanford Cardinal men's basketball, Stanford (1986–2004), where he led the program to 12 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, NCAA Tournaments, including a Final Four appearance in 1998 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, 1998. Montgomery previously served as head coach at the Montana Grizzlies basketball, Montana (1978–1986). Following his time at Stanford, he coached the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for two seasons (2004–2006) before ending his career at the California Golden Bears men's basketball, University of California (2008–2014). He announced his retirement from coaching following the 2013–14 season. All-America
The All-America designation is an annual honor bestowed on outstanding athletes in the United States who are considered to be among the best athletes in their respective sport. Individuals receiving this distinction are typically added to an All-America team for their sport. Some sports have multiple All-America teams, and list the honorees as members of a first team, second team, or third team. All-America teams are composed of outstanding U.S. amateur athletes. The 1991 Big Sky Conference men's basketball tournament was the sixteenth edition, held March 6–9 at Dahlberg Arena at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. Top-seeded host Montana defeated two-time defending champion Idaho in the championship game, to win their first Big Sky tournament title. Format No new teams were added to the Big Sky prior to the 1990–91 season, leaving total membership at nine. No changes were made to the tournament format, except that host site was not predetermined and went to the regular season champion. The event has been held annually since 1976, the conference's thirteenth year. The tournament winner earns a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament.
