Stephen Duffy
Stephen Anthony James Duffy (born 30 May 1960 in Alum Rock, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England) is an English musician, singer and songwriter of Irish ancestry. He was a founding member, vocalist, bassist, and then drummer of Duran Duran. He went on to record as a solo performer under several different names, and is the singer and songwriter for The Lilac Time with his elder brother Nick. He has also co-written with Robbie Williams and Steven Page. Career Duran Duran and other early work While attending the School of Foundation Studies & Experimental Workshop at Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University), Duffy met John Taylor. Together, along with Taylor's childhood friend Nick Rhodes, they formed the group Duran Duran. While Taylor was the guitarist (later switching to bass) and Rhodes played the synthesizer, Duffy was the band's vocalist/lyricist and bassist. Alum Rock, Birmingham
Alum Rock is an inner-city suburb of Birmingham, England, located roughly 2 miles east of Birmingham city centre. The area is officially a division of Saltley. Name origin and neighbouring areas The name probably refers to the rock from which the mineral salt called alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) is extracted and used in the tanning of leather as well as other processes. The area was being referred to as Alom Rock in 1718. This suggests a large quantity of this rock somewhere there. Alum Rock includes the connecting streets of the 3 km Alum Rock Road beginning at Saltley Gate and ending at Railway Bridge. "Kiss Me" is a song originally released in 1982 by the British band Tin Tin (sometimes written ''TinTin''). The song was allegedly written within 24 hours after the band had signed a record deal with WEA Records. Released as the band's debut single, it failed to chart on the UK Singles Chart. In 1983, it was released on Sire Records in the U.S., where it made the ''Billboard'' dance chart. The lead singer and guitarist in Tin Tin, Stephen Duffy, later re-recorded the song twice and released it as a solo single using the name of Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy. ''The Ups and Downs'' is the debut album by the English singer/songwriter Stephen Duffy (released under the name Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy). It was released in April 1985 and reached No. 35 on the UK Albums Chart. It includes the UK No. 4 single, " Kiss Me", a solo re-recording of a song originally recorded with his earlier band, Tin Tin. A second single from the album, "The Icing on the Cake" reached #14 in the UK. Although further singles from the album were released, none charted within the top 75. During a 2008 interview to promote its expanded CD reissue, Duffy commented that "I never liked ''The Ups and Downs''. Dexys (known as Dexys Midnight Runners from 1978 to 2011) are an English pop rock band from Birmingham, with soul music, soul influences, who achieved major commercial success in the early to mid- 1980s. Andy "Stoker" Growcott
Andrew Growcott (a.k.a. Stoker) is a former member of the pop rock band Dexys Midnight Runners. After the Dexys broke up, he and another bandmate, Mickey Billingham, joined new wave band General Public. Growcott also played with Stephen Tin Tin Duffy in the early 1980s. He has since transitioned into a career as an audio engineer, working on albums such as Ice Cube's ''Death Certificate'' (1991).
