Stefano Levialdi Ghiron
Stefano (or Esteban) Levialdi Ghiron (1936–2015) was an Italian computer scientist who was a full professor at the Sapienza University of Rome. His research areas included visual programming languages, image processing, pattern recognition, and human-computer interaction. Stefano Levialdi graduated in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires in 1959. He lectured in Electronics at the University of Genova and was a researcher of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, National Research Council of Italy (CNR) for 13 years, working on parallel image processing. In 1981 he became full professor at the University of Bari, and moved to the Sapienza University of Rome in 1983. Pattern recognition is the task of assigning a class to an observation based on patterns extracted from data. While similar, pattern recognition (PR) is not to be confused with pattern machines (PM) which may possess PR capabilities but their primary function is to distinguish and create emergent patterns. Shi-Kuo Chang () is a Taiwanese-American computer scientist and writer best known for his science fiction novels and short stories. Life and career Chang was born in Chongqing in 1944 and grew up in Taiwan. After completing an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at National Taiwan University, Chang arrived in the United States in 1966 as a graduate student. In 1967 he completed his master's degree at University of California, Berkeley, in computer science, earning his doctorate in 1969. From 1969 to 1975, Chang worked as a research scientist at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
