States Of Jersey Ambulance Service
The States of Jersey Ambulance Service (SJAS) is managed by the Justice and Home Affairs department. In 2022 in order to deal with peaks in demand and unexpected events it changed the way emergency calls were prioritised. Staff shortages were attributed to the cost of living on the island and it was suggested that there could be accommodation provided for the ambulance staff. Calls will be prioritised similarly to practice in NHS ambulance services. It launched a community first responders scheme in 2022. Performance The service was said to be a good organisation with "passionate and caring staff who provide a good quality of care to patients" when reviewed in 2022 but levels of staff were said to be inadequate in terms of meeting current demands. An overspend of around £400,000 was expected by the end of 2022. A lack of core capacity leads more agency staff being used and for staff doing more overtime. The Government of Jersey () is the executive body of the States of Jersey and is the central government of the Bailiwick of Jersey. The government is led by the Chief Minister (currently Lyndon Farnham, since 2024), who nominates all the remaining ministers, all elected by the States Assembly. NHS Ambulance Services
National Health Service ambulance services provide free at the point of use emergency medical care to any person requiring treatment, regardless of immigration or visitor status, within the United Kingdom. These services are provided by National Health Services of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Community First Responder
A Community first responder (CFR), is a person available to be dispatched by an ambulance control centre to attend medical emergencies in their local area. They can be members of the public, who have received training in life-saving interventions such as defibrillation, off duty paramedics, nurses or medical doctors, or indeed professionals from a non-medical discipline who may be nearby or attending emergencies, such as firefighters. A paramedic is a healthcare professional trained in the medical model, whose main role has historically been to respond to emergency calls for medical help outside of a hospital. Jersey General Hospital
Jersey General Hospital in Saint Helier is the only hospital on the island of Jersey. It has 219 beds. Medical students are placed at the hospital by the Wessex Deanery of Health Education England. History It was originally a poorhouse. The foundation stone was laid in 1765 but the building was requisitioned by the military in 1779 as there was no barracks on the island. It was used as a hospital poorhouse from 1793. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1859. Until 1868, when St Saviour's Hospital was opened, it also served as a lunatic asylum. Jersey Airport
Jersey Airport is an international airport located in the parish of Saint Peter, west northwest of Saint Helier in Jersey, in the Channel Islands. History Foundation and early years Air service to Jersey before 1937 consisted of biplane airliners and some seaplanes landing on the beach at Saint Aubin's bay. Jersey Airways and Imperial Airways were among those who operated to the island before the Second World War, but conditions were difficult as tides governed timetables.
