State Theatre (Sandusky, Ohio)
Schine State Theatre, also known as the State Theatre, or the Sandusky State Theatre, is a historic theater building in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982. History The building opened as a 1,800-seat vaudeville theatre on October 12, 1928, and featured a Page 3 pipe organ. In September 1930 the theatre was purchased by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp.. In 1933, the building was taken over by the Seltz Theatre Company. The Sandusky State Theatre Inc. foundation was formed as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1988, to restore the structure. In June 2020, the roof and part of the building collapsed after a large storm. It was then extensively renovated, and reopened in late 2023. An endowment fund for the building was established at the Erie County Community Foundation to help insure the theatre’s future operations. Sandusky ( ) is a city in Erie County, Ohio, United States, and its county seat. Situated on the southern shore of Lake Erie, Sandusky is located roughly midway between Toledo, Ohio, Toledo ( west) and Cleveland ( east). At the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the city had a population of 25,095, and the Sandusky metropolitan area had 115,986 residents. Sandusky was established in the early 19th century and developed as a port city at the head of Sandusky Bay. Vaudeville (; ) is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment which began in France in the middle of the 19th century. Page Organ Company
The Page Organ Company was an American manufacturer of theater pipe organs, located in Lima, Ohio. The ''Page Company'' started very small, with a home-built organ in 1922. However, the company experienced much growth over the following decade, with a steady demand for theatre organs. The company experienced a decline in the early 1930s with the introduction of sound films, coupled with the onset of the Depression. The company was sold to an employee named Ellsworth Beilharz in 1930, who initially assembled instruments from components purchased from the defunct Page Company.
