State Correctional Institution – Forest
The State Correctional Institution – Forest is one of two identical correctional facilities in Pennsylvania that were constructed in the beginning of the twenty-first century to hold maximum-security male inmates. SCI Forest is located in the community of Marienville, in remote Forest County. Marienville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Jenks Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania, United States. Its altitude is , and it is located at (41.4702014, -79.1247623). Other names for the community have included "Marion" and "Marionville". Marienville is a major point on a well-known ATV trail. According to the 2010 census the population of Marienville was 3,137. Marienville is the location of the SCI Forest state penitentiary. Jenks Township is a township that is located in Forest County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,849 at the time of the 2020 census, an increase from 3,629 in 2010, a figure that was, in turn, an increase from 1,261 in 2000 with the opening of the SCI Forest penitentiary. The township is the most populous municipality in all of Forest County. It was named for John W. Jenks, a county judge. Geography Jenks Township is located in southeastern Forest County, and is bordered to the east and partially to the south by Elk County and partially to the southwest by Clarion County. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) is the Pennsylvania state agency that is responsible for the confinement, care, and rehabilitation of approximately 37,000 inmates at state correctional facilities funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The agency is headquartered in Hampden Township, Cumberland County in Greater Harrisburg, near Mechanicsburg. In October 2017, then Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed a "memorandum of understanding" that allows the PADOC and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole to share like resources and eliminate duplicative efforts. All parole supervision now falls under the jurisdiction of the PADOC; while parole release decisions remain under the jurisdiction of the PA Board of Probation and Parole. 1998 Parker Middle School Dance Shooting
The James Parker Middle School dance shooting was an incident that occurred on April 24, 1998, at a banquet facility in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, United States. Andrew Jerome Wurst, 14, fatally shot 48-year-old John Gillette and wounded another teacher and two students at Nick's Place, a nearby banquet hall during an 8th-grade dinner dance. Prior to the shooting, Andrew Wurst was described as an average student and somewhat of a loner. One student noticed that he had become curt and unfriendly prior to the shooting, and had told others that he wanted to "kill people and commit suicide". He was later sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. He had no diagnosis of mental illness prior to the shooting.
