Starkville–Columbus, MS CSA
The Starkville–Columbus, MS Combined Statistical Area was formerly known as Columbus–West Point was defined as consisting of Clay and Lowndes counties in northeastern Mississippi, which were separately treated as the West Point Micropolitan Statistical Area and Columbus Micropolitan Statistical Area, respectively. As of the 2000 census, the CSA had a population of 83,565. The metropolitan area delineations published by the Office of Management and Budget in February 2013 no longer include Clay County as a micropolitan statistical area and they no longer treat the two counties as a combined statistical area. Mayhew is an unincorporated community in Lowndes County, Mississippi. Mayhew is located west of Columbus, north of Artesia, east of Starkville and south of West Point. According to the United States Geological Survey, a variant name is ''Mayhew Station''. History In 1818, Mayhew Mission was established at Mayhew by Presbyterians from Massachusetts under Cyrus Kingsbury for the purpose of Christianizing and educating the Choctaw Indians. The community was named Mayhew in honor of another missionary family from Massachusetts. The population of Mayhew Mission quickly declined after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed and the Choctaw people were forced to relocate on the Trail of Tears. Caledonia is a town in Lowndes County, Mississippi, United States, northeast of Columbus. The population was 1,041 at the 2010 census. History Caledonia was first settled in the 1820s by settlers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Artesia, Mississippi
Artesia is a town in Lowndes County, Mississippi. The population was 304 at the 2020 census, down from 440 at the 2010 census. History Artesia was originally ''Artesia Junction'', a junction point on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. During the railroad's construction in the 1850s, an offer was made to the towns of Columbus and Aberdeen to route the railroad through the towns, but both towns refused. Columbus reconsidered a few months later; but by that time, the railway had already chosen a route well to the west of the town. However, the railroad did extend a spur line in order to serve Columbus, and that spur line joins the main line at the site of present-day Artesia. Artesia was the site of a voter suppression incident in 1876 in which a group of heavily armed white men from Starkville came to intimidate black voters in the Republican Club.
