Stanmore
Stanmore is part of the London Borough of Harrow in Greater London. It is centred northwest of Charing Cross, lies on the outskirts of the London urban area and includes Stanmore Hill, one of the List of highest points in London, highest points of London, at high. The district, which developed from the ancient Middlesex parishes of Great and Little Stanmore, lies immediately west of Roman Watling Street (the A5 road) and forms the eastern part of the modern London Borough of Harrow. Stanmore is the location of the former RAF Bentley Priory station – base of the RAF Fighter Command, Fighter Command during both world wars – along with its accommodating Bentley Priory mansion, notably the last residence of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, Queen Adelaide. St John The Evangelist, Great Stanmore
St. John the Evangelist Church, Great Stanmore is an Anglicanism, Anglican church located in Great Stanmore (now simply Stanmore), London Borough of Harrow, Harrow, Middlesex. The name has been held by two churches: a red-brick church dating to 1632, now abandoned and in ruins, and its replacement, a stone church dating to 1850, which remains in use. Both buildings are separately Grade II* listed. History The original Stanmore church, located on Old Church Lane, was consecrated in the name of St. Mary. It remained the village church until 1632, when it was replaced. It was later taken down, although some faint images of its tower are known from landscapes of the area. As of the late twentieth century, a single tomb survived in the back garden of a local house. Stanmore Tube Station
Stanmore is a London Underground station in Stanmore, north-west London. It is the northern terminus of the Jubilee line and the next station towards south is Canons Park. The station is located on the south side of London Road (part of the A410) and is in Travelcard Zone 5. History Stanmore station was opened on 10 December 1932 by the Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan line). The station building and those on the branch were designed by the Metropolitan Railway's architect, Charles W. Bentley Priory
Bentley Priory is an eighteenth to nineteenth century stately home and deer park in Stanmore on the northern edge of the Greater London area in the London Borough of Harrow. It was originally a medieval priory or cell of Augustinian Canons in Harrow Weald, then in Middlesex. There are no remains of the original priory, but it probably stood near Priory House, off Clamp Hill. In 1775, Sir John Soane designed a large mansion house north of the original priory, called Bentley Priory, for the wealthy businessman James Duberley. This was added to throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by various owners. It was significantly extended in 1788, again by Sir John Soane, for John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn. The priory was the final home of the Dowager Queen Adelaide, queen consort of William IV, before her death there in 1849. Little Stanmore was an ancient parish of Middlesex which is today the residential area of Canons Park in the London Borough of Harrow, England. The parish included the western part of the town of Edgware. Toponymy The name 'Stanmore' means "pond made of stone". Little Stanmore was named to distinguish it from Great Stanmore, which is now known as Stanmore. The parish was also known as Whitchurch. Whitchurch is a common English place-name meaning 'white church', and probably referring to a church built of stone. The name has fallen out of use and is preserved in Whitchurch Gardens and Whitchurch Lane. History Little Stanmore formed an ancient parish in the Gore hundred of Middlesex. Bernays Institute is a Victorian building in Stanmore, London Borough of Harrow, England, that currently functions as a community event hall, Bernays Memorial Hall. History It was built in the old village of Great Stanmore as a parish hall and opened on 8 December 1871 by Lord George Hamilton. Bernays Institute was built as a memorial to Ernest Bernays, eldest son of Reverend Leopold Bernays, who was the rector of Stanmore at the time and chairman of Stanmore Gas Company off Marsh Lane. Ernest died at the age of 22 in a drowning accident on holiday in Ireland on 31 August 1870 - this date is written on the front of the building - he was buried at St John the Evangelist churchyard. RAF Bentley Priory
RAF Bentley Priory was a non-flying Royal Air Force station near Stanmore in the London Borough of Harrow. It was the headquarters of Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain and throughout the Second World War. The Royal Air Force station closed its operations on 30 May 2008, with all units relocating to new accommodation at RAF Northolt, a few miles away. The station incorporated Bentley Priory, which was originally built in 1766. Since its closure, the Officers' Mess has converted into the Bentley Priory Museum with exhibits focusing on the house's role in the Battle of Britain.
