Stanley Yates
Stanley Yates (born 25 October 1958) is an English-born classical guitarist and a prolific editor of 19th- and 20th-century music for the guitar.Maurice J. Summerfield: ''The Classical Guitar. Biography Yates was born in Preston, Lancashire, and studied at Liverpool University and the Sandown College of Performing Arts with Neil Smith. A prize winner of the Myra Hess Trust, he performed widely in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Since 1990, Yates lives in the United States, initially as a doctoral teaching fellow at the University of North Texas where he studied with Thomas Johnson. In the same year he won the bronze medal at the GFA Guitar Competition of the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA). Classical Guitar
The classical guitar, also known as Spanish guitar, is a member of the guitar family used in classical music and other styles. An acoustic wooden string (music), string instrument with strings made of catgut, gut or nylon, it is a precursor of the modern steel-string acoustic guitar, steel-string acoustic and electric guitars, both of which use metal string (music), strings. Classical guitars derive from instruments such as the lute, the vihuela, the gittern (the name being a derivative of the Greek "kithara"), which evolved into the Renaissance guitar and into the 17th and 18th-century baroque guitar. Myra Hess
Dame Julia Myra Hess, (25 February 1890 – 25 November 1965) was an English pianist best known for her performances of the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. Career Early life Julia Myra Hess was born on 25 February 1890 to a Jewish family in South Hampstead, London. Her paternal grandfather had immigrated from Alsace. She was the youngest of four children and began piano lessons at the age of five. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and at the Royal Academy of Music under Tobias Matthay, after winning a scholarship to the latter in 1903 at age 12. Hess's debut came in 1907 when she played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with Thomas Beecham conducting. . Ernest Shand (born Ernest William Watson; 31 January 1868 – 29 November 1924) was an English performer and composer for the classical guitar, and a music-hall singer and actor. Biography Ernest William Watson was born into a musical family in Hull, Yorkshire, his mother having been a piano teacher, his father a music dealer, and his brother an actor. He began his musical education on the violin. He came to the guitar when he discovered a composition for guitar by the Spanish composer Dionisio Aguado. Viewing it as a challenge, he bought a guitar and practised until he could play it. He then became a pupil of Madame Sidney Pratten (1821–1895) who provided him with scores and became the first publisher of his compositions. These apparently impressed her so much that by 1888 she apparently had nothing more to teach him, and that his pieces were superior to hers.
