The Viorel Mateianu Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Baia Mare, Romania. It is the home ground of CS Minaur Baia Mare (football), Minaur Baia Mare. It holds 15,500 people. It was built in the early 1950s. The stands used to be overcrowded during FC Minerul Baia Mare, Minerul Baia Mare's golden era when between 20,000 and 25,000 people used to come and see the local team playing. Big names of European football, such as Real Madrid and FC Steaua București, Steaua Bucharest, played on this stadium in the past. The stadium is ranked List of football stadiums in Romania, 22nd in order of capacity in Romania. Previously the stadium was named ''23 August'' and ''Dealul Florilor''. The stadium is named after Viorel Mateianu, the famous coach that trained FC Baia Mare between 1977 and 1981. Baia Mare ( , ; ; ; ) is a Municipiu, city along the Săsar, Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County. The city lies in the region of Maramureș, a subregion of Transylvania. It is situated about from Bucharest, from the border with Hungary, and from the border with Ukraine. Viorel Mateianu (1 June 1938 – 25 November 1997) was a Romanian football (soccer), football player and coach. Club career Mateianu was born in Lipănești, Prahova County, Prahova and started playing football in the Romanian lower leagues at Flacăra Boldești and Progresul CPCS București. He made his Liga I, Divizia A debut on 25 August 1957, playing for Progresul București in a 3–2 victory in which he scored a goal against CSM Jiul Petroșani, Energia Petroșani, shortly after his debut, Mateianu was nicknamed "Little Alfredo Di Stéfano". In 1957, during a football tournament held in San Sebastián, Spain in which he participated with one of Romania's youth teams, Mateianu had an offer to play for Real Madrid, which he refused, not wanting to risk to never see his parents again, as he could have not been allowed to return to the country by the Socialist Republic of Romania, communist regime.
