Stadion (unit)
The stadion (plural stadia, ; latinized as stadium), also anglicized as stade, was an ancient Greek unit of length, consisting of 600 Ancient Greek feet ('' podes''). Its exact length is unknown today; historians estimate it at between 150 m and 210 m. Calculations According to Herodotus, one stadium was equal to 600 Greek feet (''podes''). However, the length of the foot varied in different parts of the Greek world, and the length of the stadion has been the subject of argument and hypothesis for hundreds of years. An empirical determination of the length of the stadion was made by Lev Vasilevich Firsov, who compared 81 distances given by Eratosthenes and Strabo with the straight-line distances measured by modern methods, and averaged the results. Carl Ferdinand Friedrich Lehmann-Haupt (11 March 1861, Hamburg – 24 July 1938, Innsbruck) was a German orientalist and historian. He specialized in Urartian research, and was co-author of ''Corpus Inscriptionum Chaldicarum'', a corpus of Urartian inscriptions. After receiving a degree in law at the University of Göttingen (1883), his focus turned to the history of ancient cultures — about which, he obtained a second doctorate from the University of Berlin (1886). Afterwards, he served as a research assistant in the Egyptology department at the Royal Museums of Berlin. In 1893 he obtained his habilitation and started work as a lecturer in ancient history. A furlong is a measure of distance in imperial units and United States customary units equal to one-eighth of a mile, equivalent to any of 660 foot (unit), feet, 220 yards, 40 rod (unit), rods, 10 chain (unit), chains, or approximately 201 metres. Posidonius (; , "of Poseidon") "of Apameia" (ὁ Ἀπαμεύς) or "of Rhodes" (ὁ Ῥόδιος) (), was a Greeks, Greek politician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer, historian, mathematician, and teacher native to Apamea (Syria), Apamea, Syria. He was considered the most learned man of his time and, possibly, of the entire Stoicism, Stoic school. Otto Cuntz (10 September 1865, Stettin – 1 December 1932, Graz) was a German-Austrian classical historian, who specialized in ancient geography and topography. He studied at the universities of Zurich, Strasbourg and Bonn, where his instructors were Heinrich Nissen, Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener. After graduation in 1888, he continued his education in Berlin as a student of Otto Hirschfeld and Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz. In 1892 he took an extended study trip to Italy, Greece, Spain and France, then in 1894 obtained his habilitation at the University of Strasbourg. In 1898 he became an associate professor, and six years later was appointed a full professor of Roman history at the University of Graz.
