Stadion is a metro station on the of the Vienna U-Bahn. It is located in Leopoldstadt, Vienna's 2nd district. The station opened in May 2008 as part of the eastern extension of the U2. The station serves the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, the largest stadium in Austria and home of the Austria national football team, as well as the Stadion Center shopping mall. About The station was opened on 10 May 2008 as part of the second phase of the U2 extension from Schottenring, becoming the line's terminus before the opening of Aspernstraße in 2010. It was inaugurated in time for the 2008 Euros, during which the Stadion hosted seven matches. During the tournament, a crowd control system - also intended for other major events - was used for the first time in Vienna. The Vienna U-Bahn () is a rapid transit system serving Vienna, Austria. The five-line network consists of of route, serving 109 stations. 459.8 million passengers rode the U-Bahn in 2019. The modern-day U-Bahn opened on 25 February 1978, after test operations that began on 8 May 1976. Parts of two of the lines, designated U4 and U6, date back to the ''Vienna Stadtbahn, Stadtbahn'' ("city railway") system, which opened in 1898. Parts of the U2 and U6 lines began as subway tunnels built to accommodate earlier tram lines. Only the U1 and U3 were built wholly as new subway lines. Aspernstraße is a station on the of the Vienna U-Bahn. It is located in Aspern, Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna. The station was opened on 2 October 2010 as part of the third expansion of the U2 between Stadion and Aspernstraße.
