St Joseph Church, Roehampton
St Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Roehampton in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was founded by the Jesuits in 1869 and designed by Frederick Walters. It is situated on the corner of Roehampton Lane and Medfield Street. History The Jesuits arrived in Roehampton during the mid-nineteenth century and created a novitiate, Manresa House, which became Whitelands College, now part of the University of Roehampton. In 1869, they started a mission to the local Catholics in the area. In 1881, they decided to build a church that would permanently accommodate the congregation. They asked Frederick Walters to design the church for them. It was the first church he designed for the Jesuits and he would go on to design more buildings for them, such as Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon, St Winefride Church, South Wimbledon and the chapel of Wimbledon College. Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon
Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic church and parish in Wimbledon, South West London initially run by the Jesuits, that serves the Catholic community of Wimbledon and surrounding areas. It is in the Archdiocese of Southwark and is situated next to Wimbledon College and Donhead Preparatory School. The main entrance to the church is on Edge Hill road, but the church can also be accessed from the adjacent Darlaston Road. History Founding The church was founded by Edith Arendrup, a member of the wealthy Courtauld family who came to live in Wimbledon in 1877. At the time, there were few Catholics in the area, so she convinced the Jesuits at Roehampton to start a Mass-centre at her house in Cottenham Park. Seven years later, she commissioned the construction of a large church in a prominent position on the slopes of Edge Hill. Catholic Directories are various publications and reference works about or produced for the Catholic Church. Early history The earliest English attempt at anything of the sort seems to have been a little ''Catholic Almanac'', which appeared for three or four years in the reign of James II (see The Month, vol. CXI, 1908). This was a mere calendar of feasts. ''The Irish Catholic Directory and Almanac'' seems to have existed under various names since 1837 or earlier. It was first called "A Complete Catholic Directory", and then, in 1846, "Battersby's Registry", from the name of the publisher. For Scotland, though the Scottish missions are included in the "Catholic Directory" published in London, there is also a separate "Catholic Directory for the Clergy and Laity of Scotland" which began under a slightly different name in 1868. Harlaxton Manor
Harlaxton is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies on the edge of the Vale of Belvoir and just off the A607, south-west from Grantham and north-east from Melton Mowbray. History Aerial photography has revealed that Harlaxton was the site of a unique neolithic long barrow enclosure that formed a cursus, believed to have been made of multiple rows of standing wooden columns. Dilwyn Jones has speculated that the form of the complex indicates that Harlaxton was an important inter-regional link during the neolithic period. The village is mentioned in the 1086 ''Domesday Book'' as "Herlavestune". The name derives from the Old English Herelaf+tun, meaning "estate or farm of Herelaf".
