St. Xavier's High School is a private aided co-educational school located in Velim, Goa, Velim village in Salcete taluka in the Indian coastal state of Goa. History On 4 August 2013, the school's playground also known as Velim Fabrica ground managed to get the attention of the Government of Goa to have it renovated by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) at an estimated cost of . Chandor
Chandor is a village in Salcete sub-district of South Goa, in the Indian state of Goa. It lies on the southern bank of the Zuari River and western bank of the Kushavati River. History The ancient city of Chandrapura, where Chandor now stands, served as a capital from the Bhoja period to that of the Kadambas. The name comes from ''Chandreshwar,'' meaning Lord of the Moon, after the Hindu god Shiva who wears a crescent in his hair. Chandor has a fort and a temple within its citadel. Located from the inland of Margao, it has both ancient and modern aspects to its history. Chandor also boasts ancient inscriptions of Bhoja kings dating back to the 3rd or 4th Century CE. Verna, Goa
Verna is a census town located in Salcete, Goa, India, adjacent to the village of Nagoa. It is located approximately 10 km north of the South Goa district headquarters Margão, 18 km south-east of Vasco da Gama and 23 km south-east of the state capital Panjim. Raia () is a quaint village in the Salcete ''taluka'' of South Goa district, Goa state, India. It is located east from the district headquarters of Margao and from the state capital Panjim. Location Gogol (two kilometres), Margao (three kilometres), and Aquem Margao (three kilometres) are nearby areas. Fatorda
Fatorda is a suburb of the city of Margao in Salcete, Goa. Fatorda has been originally home to the traditional Scheduled Tribe/ Scheduled Caste population. The Catholic Gawda community has a very large presence in Fatorda. However, due to the increasing number of buildings in Fatorda, the population has become more diverse. Fatorda is also a constituency (30-Fatorda) in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Population Fatorda has a large number of people belonging to the aboriginal Gawda community. Curtorim is a town in the Salcette taluka of South Goa district in Goa, India.It comes under Margao metropolitan region. Curtorim, a verdant agrarian village, known as the "granary of Salcete", is said to have got its name from either ' or ' since the agricultural village had ' (rooms) built on the river bank (') to store kharif and rabi crops. Joseph Vaz
Joseph Vaz, CO (21 April 165116 January 1711) was a Portuguese Oratorian priest and missionary in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Originally from Sancoale in Portuguese Goa, Vaz arrived in Ceylon during the Dutch occupation, a time when the Dutch had banned Catholicism in Ceylon and imposed Calvinism as the official religion after taking control from the Portuguese Empire. He travelled throughout the island bringing the Eucharist and the Sacraments to clandestine groups of crypto-Catholics. Later in his mission, he found shelter in the Kingdom of Kandy where he was able to work freely. By the time of his death, Vaz had managed to rebuild the Catholic Church on the island. As a result of his labors, Vaz is known as the Apostle of Ceylon. On 21 January 1995, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Colombo. Navelim
Navelim is a census town and fast growing suburb of the city of Margao located in the Salcete sub-district of South Goa district, Goa, India. It has a large parish and has played a crucial rule in South Goa politics at some stage. Navelim has been connected with some important persons from the world of Goan history. History Navelim's church was first built by the Jesuits in the 1590s; the present, Portuguese-style whitewashed structure was constructed later on when the older building became too small. The reconstruction was apparently financed by a local merchant "Barreto" who was saved from bankruptcy through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary. According to legend, this church was built in mud similar to the other churches in Salcete between 1594 and 1598. The builders were Jesuits and it was financed by the villagers.
