St. Peter und Paul, Eltville is the name of a Catholic Church, Catholic church and parish in Eltville, Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis, Germany, dedicated to Saints Saint Peter, Peter and Paul the Apostle, Paul. The parish is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Limburg, Diocese of Limburg. Several parishes were merged into St. Peter und Paul in 2015. History Earlier church buildings seemed no longer sufficient in the 14th century when Eltville became a residence of the archbishop of Mainz. The present church was probably begun in 1305, and the choir (architecture), choir was ready to be used from 1359. The tower of the last earlier church was first integrated in the new building. The church was expanded from 1420 by a new side aisle. The high tower in the west was added at about the same time. Georg Gottfried Julius Dehio (22 November 1850 – 21 March 1932), was a Baltic German art historian. In 1900, Dehio started the "''Handbuch der deutschen Kunstgeschichte''" (Handbook of German Art History), published by Ernst Wasmuth Verlag, Ernst Wasmuth. The project is ongoing and managed by the 'Dehio-Vereinigung', Munich. He gave his name to the Georg Dehio Prize (Georg Dehio Book Prize). Madern Gerthener (1360/1370 – 1430) was a German stonemason and late Gothic architect. Biography Gerthener was born in Frankfurt to Johann Gerthener, a stonemason whose business the younger Gerthener took over by 1391. In 1395 he entered the city payroll, and soon took a leading role in the city's large construction works. One of his earlier works was involvement in building the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) over the Main in 1399, and, although his role in only a few other works is directly attested, he was probably involved in a number of other projects around Frankfurt as its ''Werkmeister'', including the city walls and town hall.
