St. Louis–San Francisco 4500
St. Louis–San Francisco Railway (reporting mark SLSF, also known as the "Frisco") locomotive 4500 is a 4-8-4 Northern type steam engine. History No. 4500 was built as an oil-burning steam locomotive by Baldwin in 1942 for Frisco passenger service. It was the first 4-8-4 Northern that Frisco ordered. Along with similar locomotives 4501 and 4502, it was painted in the zephyr blue, white and gray paint scheme with "Meteor" spelled out on the side of the tender in bold, red letters. It was used for pulling Frisco's crack ''Meteor'' train service. No. 4500 even saw service pulling Frisco's ''Texas Special''. When the ''Meteor'' was dieselized, No. 4500 was re-painted into Frisco's standard black with gold striping and lettering, and assigned to passenger trains such as the ''Will Rogers''. Baldwin Locomotive Works
The Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) was an American manufacturer of railway locomotives from 1825 to 1951. Originally located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it moved to nearby Eddystone, Pennsylvania, Eddystone in the early 20th century. The company was for decades the world's largest producer of steam locomotives, but struggled to compete when demand switched to diesel locomotives. Baldwin produced the last of its 70,000-plus locomotives in 1951, before merging with the Lima Locomotive Works, Lima-Hamilton Corporation on September 11, 1951, to form the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation. Booster Engine
A locomotive booster for steam locomotives is a small supplementary two-cylinder steam engine back-gear-connected to the trailing truck axle on the locomotive or one of the trucks on the tender. It was invented in 1918 by Howard L. Ingersoll, assistant to the president of the New York Central Railroad. A rocking idler gear permits the booster engine to be put into operation by the driver (engineer). A geared booster engine drives one axle only and can be non-reversible, with one idler gear, or reversible, with two idler gears. There were variations built by the Franklin company which utilized side rods to transmit tractive force to all axles of the booster truck. The ''Meteor'' was a named passenger train operated by the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (a.k.a. SLSF or "the Frisco"). It ran overnight between Oklahoma City and St. Louis via Tulsa and was later extended to Lawton, Oklahoma on July 18, 1955. The name was shared with a branch line ''Meteor'' running between Monett, Missouri, and Paris, Texas. Later this line was truncated to terminate at Fort Smith, Arkansas. The ''Meteor'' was inaugurated between St. Louis and Tulsa in 1902.
