St. Leodegarius Church, Basford
St Leodegarius Church, Old Basford is a parish church in the Church of England. The church is Grade II* listed by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport as it is a particularly significant building of more than local interest. History The chancel dates from the 1180s and the south arcade from c1250. The south aisle and porch date from around 1340. However the church has been heavily restored and rebuilt between 1858 and 1859 by Arthur Wilson, and again when the tower collapsed in 1859, by Thomas Allom. In 1856 a new church of Christ Church, Cinderhill was created in the parish followed in 1905 by a new church of St. Aidan's Church, Basford. It is one of only four churches in England named after St. Leodegarius. The other three are Ashby St Ledgers, Hunston, West Sussex and Wyberton. Leodegar
Leodegar of Poitiers (; ; 615 – October 2, 679 AD) was a martyred Burgundian Bishop of Autun. He was the son of Saint Sigrada and the brother of Saint Warinus. Leodegar was an opponent of Ebroin, the Frankish Mayor of the Palace of Neustria, and the leader of the faction of Burgundian nobles. His torture and death made him a martyr and saint. Early life Leodegar was the son of a high-ranking Burgundian nobleman, Bodilon, Count of Poitiers and Paris and St. Sigrada of Alsace, who later became a nun in the convent of Sainte-Marie at Soissons. His brother was Warinus. He spent his childhood in Paris at the court of Clotaire II, King of the Franks and was educated at the palace school. When he was older he was sent to Poitiers, where there was a long-established cathedral school, to study under his maternal uncle, Desiderius (Dido), Bishop of Poitiers. Christ Church, Cinderhill is a Grade II listed parish church in the Church of England in Cinderhill, Nottingham. History The church dates from 1856 and was constructed as a chapel of ease to St. Leodegarius Church, Basford. It was consecrated on 19 June 1856 by Rt. Revd. John Jackson, Bishop of Lincoln. The choir vestry was added in 1902. The church was built for the local miners of Thomas North’s Babbington Colliery.
