St. John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church is a historic church at Ohio State Route 694, Ohio 694 and Main Street in Glandorf, Ohio. It was built in 1875 and added to the National Register of Historic Places, National Register in 1977. History In 1834, Father Johann Wilhelm Horstmann and other settlers immigrated from Glandorf, Germany, to Putnam County, Ohio. They acquired a tract of land from the government, and established the town of Glandorf along with the first Catholic church in Putnam County. The church building was a by log cabin that also served as a residence for Father Horstmann. The congregation quickly outgrew the original building and, in 1837, a larger hewn-log church was dedicated to St John the Baptist. Father Horstmann died in 1843 and Father Bohne, who took over the parish, began construction of a brick church building. Glandorf, Ohio
Glandorf is a village in Putnam County, Ohio, United States. The population was 969 at the 2020 census. History Glandorf was founded by Johann Wilhelm Horstmann and six other men from Glandorf, Germany in 1834. They embarked on the ship ''Columbus'' on September 7, 1833, in Amsterdam, landed November 6, 1833, in New York, and purchased some land in Putnam County in December. Members of this group were Johann F. Kahle, Wilhelm Gülker, Christian Strop, F. Wischmann, Friedrich Bredeick and Mathias and Friedrich Bockrath. Kahle bought land at Greensburg approximately 5 miles to the west of Glandorf and named it "Maria Camp". Horstmann's land was named Glandorf. Their wives and ten other families from Glandorf followed in 1834. This was just the beginning of further emigration from Germany to Ohio and other US states.
