Squad Commander
''Squad Leader'' is a tactical wargames, tactical level board war game originally published by Avalon Hill in 1977. It was designed by John Hill (game designer), John Hill and simulates on infantry combat in Europe during World War II. One of the most complex war games of its time, ''Squad Leader'' is the natural extension of the trend towards greater realism (and hence complexity) initiated by several earlier games, including Avalon Hill's own ''PanzerBlitz'' and ''Panzer Leader (game), Panzer Leader''. Those two earlier games were slightly larger in scope, with counter (board wargames), counters representing platoons and map hexes measuring 250 metres across, compared to Squad Leader's 40 meter hexes and squad sized units. A board wargame is a wargame with a set playing surface or board game, board, as opposed to being played on a computer or in a more free-form playing area as in miniatures games. The modern, commercial wargaming hobby (as distinct from military exercises, or Military simulation, war games) developed in 1950s in games, 1954 following the publication and commercial success of ''Tactics (game), Tactics''.. Geomorphic Mapboard
A geomorphic mapboard is a game board that can be configured in different ways and reused to create different playing surfaces. The mapboards are made geomorphic by using identical features along the edges of the maps, so that any two may be paired. History The concept was introduced in '' PanzerBlitz'', though the number of configurations was low. This is the moment when "geo-morphic" gets in wargaming its peculiar meaning. The back of the game box described among the contents a “three section ‘Geo-Morphic’ mapboard which can be rearranged to form dozens of different terrain configurations”. Geo-morphic was there used in the established sense of "resembling the earth and its surface features." An anvil is a metalworking tool consisting of a large block of metal (usually forged or cast steel), with a flattened top surface, upon which another object is struck (or "worked"). Anvils are massive because the higher their inertia, the more efficiently they cause the energy of striking tools to be transferred to the work piece. In most cases the anvil is used as a forging tool. Before the advent of modern welding technology, it was the primary tool of metal workers. The great majority of modern anvils are made of cast steel that has been heat treated by either flame or electric induction. Inexpensive anvils have been made of cast iron and low-quality steel, but are considered unsuitable for serious use, as they deform and lack rebound when struck. ''Crescendo of Doom'' is a supplement published in 1980 by Avalon Hill for use with the World War II board wargame ''Squad Leader''. This expansion concentrates on the early part of the war (1939–1941) in Western and Central Europe. Description ''Crescendo of Doom'' (''COD'') is an expansion (or "gamette", as described by the publisher) for ''Squad Leader'' that includes counters and rules for French and British infantry, vehicles and ordnance, with most tanks and guns being palpably less powerful than the late-war equipment in other gamettes. Because this focuses on the early years of the war before American involvement, none of the US built tanks and equipment used by the British from 1941 are included. The gamette includes more detailed infantry rules, including such things as cowering and pinning, while introducing Scouts and morale disadvantages for early war infantry facing off against tanks.
