Spümcø
Spümcø, Inc. ( ; stylized as SPÜMCØ) was an American animation studio that was active from 1989 to 2005 and based in Los Angeles, California. The studio was best known for working on the first two seasons of ''The Ren & Stimpy Show'' for Nickelodeon and for various commercials. The studio won several awards, including an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject for the music video of the song " I Miss You" by Björk. Spümcø was founded by animators John Kricfalusi, Bob Camp, Jim Smith and Lynne Naylor. Kricfalusi named the company after the fictional person "Raymond Spüm", whom he jokingly described as the inventor of animation. The golden age of American animation (exemplified by the 1940s cartoons by Bob Clampett and Tex Avery) served as inspiration for the surreal and highly expressive house style of which Spümcø became well known. ''The Ren & Stimpy Show'', commonly referred to as simply ''Ren & Stimpy'', is an American animated Comedy film, comedy television series created by John Kricfalusi for Nickelodeon. The series follows the misadventures of Ren Höek, an emotionally unstable and psychotic chihuahua (dog), chihuahua dog; and Stimpy, a good-natured and dimwitted Manx cat. John Kricfalusi
Michael John Kricfalusi ( ; born September 9, 1955), known professionally as John K., is a Canadian illustrator, blogger, and former animator and voice actor. He is the creator of the animated television series ''The Ren & Stimpy Show'', which was highly influential on televised animation during the 1990s. From 1989 to 1992, he was heavily involved with the first two seasons of the show in virtually every aspect of its production, including providing the voice of Ren Höek and other characters. In 2009, he won the Inkpot Award. Born in Quebec, Kricfalusi spent his early childhood in Germany and Belgium before returning to Canada at age seven. He acquired his skills largely by copying cartoons from newspapers and comic books as a child, and by studying cartoons and their production systems from the 1940s and 1950s. Lynne Naylor
Rae Naylor is a Canadian animator, artist, designer, director, and producer for television. She is best known for co-creating DreamWorks' '' The Mighty Ones'', co-founding the animation studio Spümcø with John Kricfalusi, Bob Camp, and Jim Smith, and co-developing ''The Ren & Stimpy Show'' for Nickelodeon. Robert Frank Camp (born February 7, 1956) is an American animator, writer, cartoonist, comic book artist, storyboard artist, director, and producer. He is best known for founding Spümcø and his work for developing and serving as a showrunner for ''The Ren & Stimpy Show''. Jim Smith (animator)
James Carl Smith (né Jobb; October 8, 1954 – May 2, 2025) was an American animator and musician. He worked on '' Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures'' with his long-time working partner John Kricfalusi. Smith later briefly worked on ''Tiny Toon Adventures'', and then along with Kricfalusi, Bob Camp and Lynne Naylor he founded Spümcø, where he co-developed ''The Ren & Stimpy Show'' (from which he departed in 1992 alongside Kricfalusi) in 1991 and ''The Ripping Friends'' in 2001. He was notable for remaining faithful to Kricfalusi, having refused to join Games Animation (though he worked on ''The X's'' after its rebranding to Nickelodeon Animation Studio), working with Kricfalusi on his projects amid other work until '' Cans Without Labels'' (2017). Stephen Worth is an American producer of animation. Worth was a producer for Bagdasarian Productions, Ralph Bakshi and John Kricfalusi's production company Spümcø. Career Worth studied at University of California, Los Angeles, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Design in 1982. He trained as an artist, but entered the film business as a production assistant at FilmFair studios, a commercial production house specializing in animation.
