Spuds, Florida
Spuds is an unincorporated community in St. Johns County, Florida, United States. The community is situated in a region that depends economically on potato growing and other agriculture. As well as potatoes, the land around Spuds provides gladioli. A camp for German prisoners of war was built in Spuds during World War II, close to the intersection between State Roads 206 and 207. Location Spuds is located at (29.7394, -81.4717), near the intersection of State Road 207, which is six miles to the south-west leads to Hastings and 25 miles to the north-east leads to St. Augustine, and County Road 13, which eventually leads to Jacksonville, 50 miles to the north. State Road 206 (Florida)
State Road 206 (SR 206) is a 2-lane-wide, state highway completely within St. Johns County in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Florida. It extends from SR 207 south-southwest of Spuds to SR A1A in Crescent Beach, two blocks west of the Atlantic Ocean. Route description SR 206 begins at an intersection with SR 207 in Spuds, near Deep Creek, a small tributary of the St. Johns River. From there, SR 206 travels east through uninhabited farmland, crossing Interstate 95 (I-95). East of I-95, the road is mostly uninhabited, but establishments slowly emerge, especially east of US 1 in Dupont Center. State Road 207 (SR 207) is a four-lane state highway in northeast Florida, extending from US 17 in East Palatka, Florida at the southwest end to US 1 in St. Augustine, Florida at the northeastern end. Route description State Road 207 begins at US 17 in East Palatka, and heads northeast through Putnam County, going through the community of Orange Mills. SR 207 then enters St. Johns County, passing through Hastings before intersecting SR 206 in Spuds. Hastings, Florida
Hastings is an unincorporated census-designated place and agricultural center in St. Johns County, Florida, United States, southwest of St. Augustine. It was formerly an incorporated town, but it was dissolved in 2018 after a vote by residents. The population was 1,262 at the 2020 census, up from 580 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Henry Morrison Flagler built tourist hotels at St. Augustine in the late 19th century, including the Ponce de León Hotel. He needed a local source of fresh vegetables for his guests, so he persuaded Thomas Horace Hastings, his cousin, to develop a farm. A small community evolved into a town, which was named for its founder in 1890. Hastings is known as the "Potato Capital of Florida" with of potato farms, but also produces cabbage, onions, eggplant and ornamental horticulture. The Florida East Coast Railway is a Class II railroad operating in the U.S. state of Florida, currently owned by Grupo México. Built primarily in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, the FEC was a project of Standard Oil principal Henry Flagler. He originally visited Florida with his first wife, Mary; they sought assistance with the health issues she faced. A key strategist who worked closely with John D.
