Spišská Nová Ves District
Spišská Nová Ves District () is a district in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia. The district in its present borders was established in 1996. Administrative, economic and cultural center is its seat Spišská Nová Ves. The district borders Gelnica District and Rožňava District in the south and Poprad District, Prešov District and Levoča District in the north. Districts Of Slovakia
The districts of Slovakia are administrative units known as in the Slovak language. It is a second-tier territorial administrative unit, below a Region () in standing, and superior to a municipality (). Each district contains at least several municipalities. The cities of Bratislava and Košice are the only cities in Slovakia divided into internal urban districts, with five in Bratislava, and four in Košice. These urban districts are then further divided into smaller boroughs (which serve a function analogous to municipalities in typical districts). All other districts are larger in size and also include rural areas, and rural as well as urban municipalities. Each of these more typical districts has an urban centre serving as the seat of the district, usually the largest town (or the only town) of a given district. Markušovce
Markušovce (; ) is a village and municipality in the Spišská Nová Ves District in the Košice Region of central-eastern Slovakia. History Markušovce was founded in the 12th century before the Tatar invasions of the region. The village was owned by the Máriássy family from the 13th century, and many members of the family are buried in the village's Church of St. Michael. Krompachy
Krompachy (, ) is a town in Slovakia, with a rich mining and metallurgical history, well-known both in Slovakia and in its close neighboring countries for its Plejsy ski center. History The town was first mentioned in 1282 in a charter by King Ladislaus IV as belonging to the domain of Spiš Castle. The town's name derives from German (Krumm Bach - crooked stream), as the town was settled by German colonists. From then onwards, it was a centre of mining and metallurgy until the end of the 20th century, particularly focussed on the iron and copper industries. At the start of the 20th century, the Krompachy Ironworks (Krompašská železiareň) had around 3,500 employees and was the biggest ironworks of its time in the Kingdom of Hungary. Hrabušice
Hrabušice () is a village and municipality in the Spišská Nová Ves District in the Košice Region of central-eastern Slovakia. Hrabušice is the starting point for the walks through Slovak karst region. Tourism is a major local employer here. History The village was first mentioned in local records in 1279. It contains the 13th century Church of St. Laurence, and the ruins of a Carthusian monastery, built about 1305 on the site of a refuge used during the period of the Tatar invasions. Geography The village lies at an altitude of 548 metres and covers an area of 40.886 km². In 2011 Hrabušice had a population of about 2,378 inhabitants.
