Spind
Spind is a former municipality that was located in the old Vest-Agder county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1893 until 1965. It was located on the Spind peninsula in the western part of the present-day municipality of Farsund in Agder county. The peninsula lies between the Lygndalsfjord and the Rosfjord. The administrative centre of Spind was located in the village of Rødland where Spind Church is located. History The municipality of Spind was established on 17 October 1893 when it was split from the municipality of Herad. At the time of its establishment, Spind had 1,410 inhabitants. On 1 July 1916, a small part of the neighboring municipality of Austad (population: 4) was transferred to Spind. Spind Church
Spind Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Farsund Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of Rødland in the Spind area to the east of the town of Farsund. It is one of the three churches for the Farsund parish which is part of the Lister og Mandal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a cruciform design in 1776 using plans drawn up by the architect Lars Albertsen Øvrenes. The church seats about 500 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1328, but the old stave church was likely built during the 1200s. Not much is known about the old church, but it is known that in 1776 a new church was built on higher ground about to the west of the old church. Herad
Herad is a former municipality that was located in the old Vest-Agder county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1965. The municipality encompassed the area northeast of the lake Framvaren inside the present-day municipality of Farsund in what is now Agder county. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Sande where the Herad Church is located. History The parish of ''Herred'' was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). On 17 October 1893, the southern district of Herad was separated to create the new municipality of Spind. The split left Herad with 1,019 inhabitants. Vest-Agder
Vest-Agder (; "West Agder") was one of 18 counties (''fylker'') in Norway from 1 January 1919 to 31 December 2019, after it was merged with Aust-Agder to form Agder county. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. By 1958, the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. By 1966, most of the mergers had been carried out and there were only 470 municipalities remaining. Farsund (town)
is the administrative centre of Farsund municipality in Agder county, Norway. The town is located near the mouth of the Lyngdalsfjorden, about east of the village of Vanse. Frelserens Church is the main church for the town. The town has a population (2019) of 3,377 and a population density of . In Norway, Farsund is considered a which can be translated as either a "town" or "city" in English. History The village of Farsund grew up around a protected harbour on the Lyngdalsfjorden. It was a sheltered place for merchant ships to dock as opposed to the nearby ports at Lista or Lindesnes which were exposed to the open ocean. Austad is a former municipality of the former Vest-Agder county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1909 until its dissolution in 1963. The municipality encompassed the area surrounding the Rosfjorden in the southern, coastal part of the present-day municipality of Lyngdal.
