Sphaerocarpaceae
Sphaerocarpaceae is a family of liverworts known as bottle liverworts. Approximately ten species are included in this family, most of them in the genus '' Sphaerocarpos'', but one additional species in the genus ''Geothallus''. Distribution The majority of species in the family occur along the western edge of the Americas, from Washington to central Chile. However, the type species for ''Sphaerocarpos'', ''S. michelii'', is native to Europe. The weedy species '' Sphaerocarpos texanus'' is distributed widely in fields and gardens of North America, western Europe, and Mediterranean Africa. It may have been introduced with soil brought with crops or garden plants imported from the Americas. Classification The group was recognized as a tribe by Barthélemy Dumortier in 1874 and elevated to family rank in 1891 by Moritz Heeg, under the name "Sphaerocarpeae". Two extant genera are recognized, with a single species in ''Geothallus'' and the remaining species assigned to ''Sphaer ... Sphaerocarpales
Sphaerocarpales is an order of plants within the liverworts. Approximately twenty species are in this order which is sub-divided into four families: Monocarpaceae, Sphaerocarpaceae and Riellaceae, as well as the extinct family Naiaditaceae. The inclusion of the Naiaditaceae is uncertain, and the family has sometimes been assigned to the Calobryales. Janegraya
''Janegraya'' is a genus of fossil with controversial interpretation from the Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian, 460 million years old) Douglas Lake Member of the Lenoir Limestone from Douglas Dam Tennessee. The generic name honors Jane Gray, and the epithet means "prophetess". Description ''Janegraya'' is considered as a minute fossil balloonwort (Sphaerocarpaceae) by Gregory Retallack, and similar to living ''Sphaerocarpos''. Its spores are permanent tetrads closed within a thin perine, widely known among Ordovician dispersed spores as ''Tetrahedraletes''. Biological affinities The interpretation of this fossil as an Ordovician example of Sphaerocarpaceae has been questioned in some quarters but accepted in others. Sphaerocarpos Texanus
''Sphaerocarpos texanus'', the Texas balloonwort, is a species of liverwort in the Sphaerocarpaceae family, found in the Americas, northern Africa and Europe. Description ''Sphaerocarpos texanus'' are small, thalloid, dioecious liverworts. The species is sexually dimorphic, with male plants usually 3–5 mm in diameter, females up to 12 mm in diameter. Both male (bearing antheridia) and female (bearing archegonia) plants are bright green, with the thallus branching up to several times. The plant is a winter annual, appearing in autumn and dying in spring. Notably, the spores occur in sets of four, called tetrads. Unlike most other species of liverwort, the spores stay in these tetrads until they germinate. Habitat The plant is found on flat, lightly shaded soil. Usually by roadsides. Distribution ''Sphaerocarpos texanus'' has a wide range, probably the widest of any species in its genus. It has been found on several continents, in the United States, Uruguay, Eng ...
