Southside is a neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Its boundaries are Third Street to the west, Woodlawn Avenue, Allmond Avenue and Hiawatha Avenue to the north, the CSX railroad tracks to the east, and the southern boundary of the Greater Louisville Technology Park Naval Ordnance Station Louisville ("NOSL") is a major employer of Louisville, Kentucky, near Standiford Field. Greater Louisville Technology Park
Naval Ordnance Station Louisville ("NOSL") is a major employer of Louisville, Kentucky, near Standiford Field. For over fifty years, starting in late 1941, it provided maintenance and equipment for the United States Navy. Since the end of the Cold War Naval Ordnance was the main hub for repair and replace of major guns and equipment on battleships along with work for NASA, after which most of it has been turned over to private companies, and the complex is currently named the Greater Louisville Technology Park. History The area for Naval Ordnance was chosen due to being so far inland, that it would be difficult for enemies to strike it. Beechmont, Louisville
Beechmont is a neighborhood in the south end of Louisville, Kentucky. Its modern boundaries are I-264 to the north, Taylor Boulevard to the west, Southern Parkway and Southland Boulevard to the south, and Third Street, Allmond and Louisville Avenues to the east. Iroquois Park is located to its southwest. The park, purchased by Louisville Mayor Charles Donald Jacob in 1889 and completed in 1893, was connected to the city by Southern Parkway (originally called Grand Boulevard), in a master plan designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Much like Shawnee Park spurred development in the Shawnee neighborhood, Iroquois Park contributed to making Beechmont a desirable suburb as it was developed in the 1890s. Highland Park, Louisville
Highland Park was a city near and eventually neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, that was razed as a part of the expansion of Louisville International Airport. Its boundaries were roughly the CSX railroad tracks to the west, and what would become the Kentucky State Fair & Exposition Center and the airport on all other sides (initially these were farm land). Highland Park was originally built largely for workers at the nearby Louisville & Nashville Railroad yard, with professor and businessman T. C. H. Vance laying out streets in the 1880s. Its relatively common name was based on its elevated location in relation to surrounding areas, particularly Louisville. Vance's daughter gave the streets their Indian-themed names, such as Hiawatha and Wampum, which was a fashionable practice at the time. Iroquois, Louisville
Iroquois is a neighborhood on the south side of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It is split into two parts by Beechmont. From a historical perspective, the northwestern section would be the Bryn Mawr neighborhood and the southeastern section would be the Kenwood neighborhood. The Iroquois neighborhood is roughly bounded by Hazelwood Avenue, Beechmont, Third Street, Kenwood Drive, and Iroquois Park. Located near the Louisville International Airport, residents have frequently complained of noise and challenged airport expansion. The largely residential neighborhood was developed as a suburb after World War II and into the 1950s. The notorious Iroquois Tenement Housing Complex was torn down in 2012 and replaced with the Hope Garden Project, an urban farming collaboration involving KentuckyOne Health, the Food Literacy Project and the Metro Housing Authority. Kenwood Hill, Louisville
Kenwood Hill is a hill and neighborhood on the south side of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Its boundaries are New Cut Road, Kenwood Drive, Southside Drive and Palatka Road. The hill, earlier known as ''Sunshine Hill'' and then ''Cox's Knob'', was used by Native Americans to spot buffalo. By 1868 Benoni Figg owned the area as a part of his charcoal business. His family oversaw development on the land until it was sold in 1890 to a development company which named the area Kenwood Hill. Southern Parkway (initially called Grand Boulevard) was opened soon after in 1893. In 1893, Kenwood Hill residents Patty and Mildred J. Hill composed the song "Good Morning to All", which was to become "Happy Birthday to You". While wealthy Louisvillians built summer homes in the area, and the first subdivision did not begin until 1942, the neighborhood was widely developed by the 1960s, so much so that extensive work was needed to halt erosion on the hill in the 1980s.
