Southport is a New England town, town and island in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 622 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. It includes the neighborhoods of Cozy Harbor, Newagen, Pine Cliff, West Southport, and the Capitol Island and Squirrel Island, Maine, Squirrel Island summer colonies. The majority of the town's residents live on its main island, Southport Island. History The Abenaki people who originally inhabited the island called it Capanewagen. Cape Newagen, an English corruption of the Abenaki name, was the name of an early English people, English fishing outpost at the southern tip of the island. The island would later be known as Newagen Island by Europeans. While the first European settlement was established in 1623, the island was abandoned by the English when they were driven from the region by the Abenaki during King Philip's War, King Phillip's War in 1676. King Philip's War
King Philip's War (sometimes called the First Indian War, Metacom's War, Metacomet's War, Pometacomet's Rebellion, or Metacom's Rebellion) was an armed conflict in 1675–1678 between a group of indigenous peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands against the English New England Colonies and their indigenous allies. The war is named for Metacom (alternatively Metacomet), the Pokanoket chief and sachem of the Wampanoag who had adopted the English name Philip because of the friendly relations between his father Massasoit and the Plymouth Colony. Boothbay Harbor, Maine
Boothbay Harbor is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,027 at the 2020 census. It includes the neighborhoods of Mount Pisgah, and Sprucewold, the Bayville and West Boothbay Harbor villages, and the Isle of Springs summer colony. Boothbay Harbor is surrounded by the larger town of Boothbay. During summer months, it is a popular yachting and tourist destination. History The Abenaki people that lived in the region called it Winnegance. The first European presence in the region was an English fishing outpost called Cape Newagen in 1623. An Englishman by the name of Henry Curtis purchased the right to settle Winnegance from the Abenaki Sachem Mowhotiwormet in 1666. State Route 238 (SR 238) is a state highway located on Southport Island in south central Maine. It runs entirely within the town of Southport and intersects with SR 27 at both ends. SR 238 traverses the eastern edge of Southport Island, serving as an alternate to SR 27 which runs roughly parallel on the western side of the island. It is locally named Cape Newagen Road over its entire length.
