The Main Southern Railway (or Great Southern Railway) is a major railway in New South Wales, Australia. It runs from Sydney to Albury, near the Victoria, Australia, Victorian border. The line passes through the Southern Highlands, New South Wales, Southern Highlands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Riverina regions. Description of route The Main Southern Railway commences as an electrified pair of tracks in the Sydney metropolitan area. Since 1924, the line branches from the Main Suburban railway line at Lidcombe railway station, Lidcombe and runs via Regents Park railway station, Regents Park to Cabramatta railway station, Cabramatta, where it rejoins the original route from Granville railway station, Granville. Southern Line (Auckland)
The Southern Line in Auckland, New Zealand, is the name given to suburban train services that operate between Britomart Station in central Auckland and Pukekohe via Newmarket. Routing From Waitematā to Newmarket, Southern Line services use the Newmarket Line, then follow the North Auckland Line to Westfield Junction, and thence onto the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) line as far as Pukekohe, the terminus of the Southern Line. In its entirety, this line follows the original 1875 North Island Main Trunk route between central Auckland and Pukekohe. The line, originally single-tracked, was duplicated, piecemeal, between 1909 and 1939. In 1915, the original single-track Parnell tunnel was bypassed by a twin-track tunnel. The Southern Line is a commuter rail line operated by Metrorail Western Cape, connecting Cape Town railway station, Cape Town station in central Cape Town, South Africa with the Southern Suburbs, Cape Town, Southern Suburbs and the towns on the west coast of False Bay, terminating in Simon's Town. History The Wynberg Railway Company was established in 1861 to build a railway line from Salt River railway station, Salt River Junction to Wynberg, Cape Town, Wynberg, which opened on 19 December 1864. In 1876 the company was taken over by the Cape Government Railways, and the line, which had originally been built to the standard gauge, was rebuilt to Cape gauge. Southern Line () is a metre-gauge railway line in Thailand, operated by State Railway of Thailand (SRT), which runs through most of the provinces in the Central, Western, and Southern regions of Thailand. At 1,144.29 kilometres in length, it is Thailand's longest railway line. History In 1894, the Danish engineer Aage Westenholz (1859–1935), uncle of the writer Karen Blixen, was given the concession to build a route from Bangkok to Phetchaburi. The project failed due to the difficulty of raising sufficient capital. As a result, the Thai state decided in 1898 to build the main rail lines and bought back the concession. Other concession requests made by railroad entrepreneurs in the Thai part of the Malay Peninsula were all rejected.
