South Ribble (UK Parliament Constituency)
South Ribble is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Paul Foster for Labour. History The seat of South Ribble was created for the 1983 general election, following the local government changes in the 1970s which saw the creation of the main constitutive borough of the same name. It has been a classic bellwether seat since its creation, changing hands with the change of government. Former Preston North MP Robert Atkins won the South Ribble constituency in 1983 and fought the seat in every election up to the 1997 general election. At that time, in dramatic bellwether fashion, Labour's David Borrow gained the seat on a clear majority, with nearly 26,000 votes, 2,000 less than Atkins' victory in the corresponding "landslide" year of 1983. Higher Walton, Lancashire
Higher Walton is a village in South Ribble, Lancashire, England. It is on the old road between Blackburn and Preston where it crosses the River Darwen. The road, at this point, is now part of the A675. Nearby places include Walton-le-Dale, Coupe Green, and Bamber Bridge. The main road through the village has a number of shops, including a post office, a bicycle shop and takeaways. The village has two pubs - the Swan and the Mill Tavern. There is a church ( All Saints, in the Blackburn diocese of the Church of England) and a primary school in the village. Samlesbury ( ''or locally'' ) is a village and civil parish in South Ribble, Lancashire, England. Samlesbury Hall, a historic house, is in the village, as is Samlesbury Aerodrome and a large modern brewery owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. The population at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census was 1,206. History The village's name is derived from the Old English ''sceamol'', meaning ledge and ''burh'' meaning fortification, hence literally "ledge fortification". It may also be that the name at least partly derives from the Roman Empire, Roman name for the River Ribble and its eponymous Celtic mythology, Celtic deity, Belisama. Walton-le-Dale is a large village in the borough of South Ribble, in Lancashire, England. It lies on the south bank of the River Ribble, opposite the city of Preston, adjacent to Bamber Bridge. The population of the South Ribble Ward at the 2011 census was 3,792. To the west of Walton-le-Dale is the residential area of Walton Park. History Toponymy Walton is derived from ''walh'' and ''tun'' and means the farmstead or settlement of the Britons. It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Waletune. Bamber Bridge is a large village in Lancashire, England, south-east of Preston, in the borough of South Ribble. The name derives from the Old English "bēam" and "brycg", which probably means "tree-trunk bridge". People who live in Bamber Bridge like to be known as Briggers. History Textiles By 1764 calico printing had been established in what was then a village; this was the first example of calico printing anywhere in Lancashire. Previously had been mainly carried out in the south of England, before spreading to Scotland and the northern counties. In 1857, as a result of the downturn in the cotton trade, a large manufacturer and spinner in the village (Bamber Bridge SP & WN Co.) reported liabilities estimated at £40,000 to £60,000, and were about to go on short time. South Ribble is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. Its council is based in Leyland. The borough includes the towns and villages of Penwortham, Leyland, Farington, Farington Moss, Hutton, Longton, Walmer Bridge, Much Hoole, Coupe Green, Salmesbury, Lostock Hall, Walton-le-Dale and Bamber Bridge. Lorraine Fullbrook, Baroness Fullbrook (born 28 July 1959) is a British Conservative former MP for South Ribble, first elected in 2010. Educated at Glasgow Caledonian University, Mrs Fullbrook was formerly the Conservative Leader of Hart Council in Hampshire. She joined the Cabinet of the council as the Cabinet Member for Communications. Six months later, she was promoted to Cabinet Member for Finance. Six months after taking over the finance portfolio, she was elected as Leader of the Council, after serving just one year as Councillor.
