South Bend is an unincorporated community in Young County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 140 in 2000. Geography South Bend is located at (33.0045619, -98.6683934) in south central Young County. It is situated at the junction of State Highway 67 and FM 701. History The area was settled in the late 1890s. The first storekeeper in the vicinity was J.N. Smith, who named the community Arkansas. Young County, Texas
Young County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 17,867. Its county seat is Graham. The county was created in 1856 and organized in 1874. It is named for William Cocke Young, an early Texas settler and soldier. History Native Americans The Brazos Indian Reservation, founded by General Randolph B. Marcy in 1854, provided a refuge from warring Comanche for the Delaware, Shawnee, Tonkawa, Wichita, Choctaw, and Caddo peoples, who had migrated into Texas from other areas. The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) is an American nonprofit educational and research organization dedicated to documenting the history of Texas. It was founded in Austin, Texas, United States, on March 2, 1897. In November 2008, the TSHA moved its offices from Austin to the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In 2015, the offices were relocated again to the University of Texas at Austin. History On February 13, 1897, ten persons convened to discuss the creation of a nonprofit to promote Texas state history. George Pierce Garrison, chair of the University of Texas history department, led the organizational meeting establishing the association on March 2, 1893. The TSHA elected Oran Milo Roberts as its first president. In addition to Roberts, TSHA charter members included Guy M. Bryan, Anna Pennybacker, Bride Neill Taylor, and Dudley G. Wooten. Texas State Highway 67
State Highway 67 (SH 67) is a Texas state highway that runs between Breckenridge and Graham. History The route was originally designated on August 21, 1923, along renumbered portions of SH 22, SH 18, and SH 2 extending from Graham to Breckenridge, then southeast from Breckenridge, reaching the southern end of Waco. On July 31, 1929, SH 67 was to be rerouted away from Carlton and through Clairette and Alexander instead if bonds were voted. On December 17, 1929, it was rerouted away from Carlton and through Clairette and Alexander instead. On September 26, 1945, the section from Breckenridge to Waco was transferred to SH 6. Part became U.S. Highway 183 (US 183) and SH 69 (later SH 112). On May 6, 1974, SH 67 was relocated in Graham over a new route and a portion of FM 61.
